Travels with Charley in Search of America ReviewI have read somewhere that what makes a novel a "classic" is that it must contain some fundamental truths that can withstand changing fads, cultures and eras. I know that "Travels with Charley" is not a novel but a memoir. However, this memoir contains so much truth that it deserves--and has acheived--almost instant "classic" status.
It is about John Steinbeck's trip across America. He begins in New York, drives up through Maine, across the midwest, through Montana to Washington, down the Pacific Coast, through Texas and finally through the American southeast. He was 58 when he took this trip, and his only companions were his loyal dog Charley and trailer Rocinante. I appreciated the way that Steinbeck respected Charley, gave him human characteristics, and looked for Charley's observations on mankind as well as his own.
I have heard this memoir described as an "angry" book, but I think this only describes a small portion of Steinbeck's experiences on the road. Steinbeck was certainly troubled by certain things--chief among them the horrifying "witches sabbath" that occurred in New Orleans. He also looked with sadness upon the "progress" that has diminished our cultural identities and ravaged our beautiful land. However, he was wise enough to know that older people often cling to the past simply because it is familiar, but not because it was superior or even good. He recognized that trait in himself and challenged it.
Some individual passages in this book were so wise I read them several times to try to appreciate the full extent of his wisdom. For example, the passage where Steinbeck remarks that too many older people turn in their exciting lives for healthy and safe ones. He wrote that he was not willing to exchange the quality of his life for slightly more quantity. As I read this passage, I considered that he died less than 10 years after writing this book. Sad, but how many people do a solo, cross-country road trip in their twilight years?
I also appreciated, but was wounded by, his descriptions of racial unrest in the south. The witches sabbath brought tears to my eyes, as it described the young black students as ultimately less pitiable then their tormenters. The students were going places and had their whole lives before them; their tormenters were ugly, twisted people clinging to a past that they cherished simply because they feared the future and the unknown.
Ultimately, "Travels with Charley" is about embracing life. Though Steinbeck saw much that troubled him, he saw much more that was beautiful, like the migrant farmers in Maine, the kind veterinarian in Amarillo, the wonderful tire shop owner in Portland. As Steinbeck remarks, the America that he wrote about in this book doesn't exist anymore. If we followed his exact route today, we would encounter something entirely different--both because of the passage of time and because of our varying perspectives. However, while the America he wrote about no longer exists, the Americans do, and Steinbeck's memoir is a love song to them.Travels with Charley in Search of America Overview

The Great Bridge: The Epic Story of the Building of the Brooklyn Bridge ReviewIt is hard for me to be objective about this book. First off, I am a great admirer of David McCullough's histories. Second, I have published two novels which are set in New York during the mid-19th Century. But what probably makes it hardest for me to be objective is that I have walked over that bridge for my own personal pleasure so many times over the decades that I consider it an old friend. It's my bridge.
Having said all that, I can say that Mr. McCullough has written a history that is not only about a bridge and its builders, which are fascinating subjects in their own right, but it is also about what New Yorkers were thinking back then. This was still a horizontal world; the era of early skyscrapers was a few decades away. Because of this and the rapid growth in population after the Civil War, Manhattan was mostrously choked by block after block of four- and five-story tenements, warehouses and factories. The need for a reliable means to get to the vast open spaces of Brooklyn was urgent. Ironically, however, it wasn't the horizontal--the length of the bridge--which stunned the witnesses to the construction. Instead they marvelled at the height of the towers and the height of the roadway over the East River.
Not as ironic, however, were the people who didn't marvel at the bridge's beauty and the strength of its construction. They were too busy licking their lips, wringing their hands and wondering how much of the bridge's budget would make its way into their wallets. The elements of corruption, then as now, always lurked near a great public work in New York. McCullough covers this tainted side just as carefully as he reports on the glory of the growth of the bridge. Heroes (the Roeblings) and villains (Tweed & Co.) abound, while New York's most beautiful and efficient structure comes to life.
I've been as honest as possible. I recommend this book highly to anyone with an interest in engineering, New York history, or just a good story with great characters.

First In: An Insider's Account of How the CIA Spearheaded the War on Terror in Afghanistan ReviewEDIT of 20 Dec 07 to add links.
This is a superb first-person account. I have absolute and total respect for this officer, his team, his courage, and what he accomplished within weeks of 9-11, setting the stage for a new form of warfare in which CIA opened the door, Special Forces turned on the lights, and conventional Air Force leveled the place.
The book provides some extremely useful insights from the field with respect to Washington's failure to understand local politics and ground truth despite frequent detailed field appraisals from the Chief of Station, and the book makes it clear that Pakistan lobbied Washington strategically and ably to "sell" its plan for taking over Afghanistan with its own allies, against both Russian and US (and for that matter, Chinese) best interests.
There are five substantive military insights in this book:
1) Despite their enormous personal courage and high level of training, the US military special forces are handicapped by a joint defense-level policy that will not do deep bombing unless a Search & Rescue (SAR) capability is readily available. I recall the original Office of Strategic Services dropping people behind enemy lines (the pilots understood they might be shot down as part of the deal) and I just think to myself, shame on DoD, this force protection zero tolerance for casualties has gone too far. We need a Chairman of the Joint Chiefs with the balls to change the military culture back to one that is mission oriented rather than casualty averse.
2) Partly as a result of Pakistani influence [the author notes that the Pakistanis co-opted the CIA Station in Pakistan, not just the State Department and NSC in Washington] and point one above, the targeting authorities (CENTCOM and the Air Force) were very slow to act professionally on the targets identified by the Northern Alliance and the CIA field teams. I was enormously impressed by the GPS field surveys that the CIA team carried out, and under-whelmed by the Air Force focus on warehouses near Kabul rather than specified armed forces blocking the Northern Alliance path toward Kabul. I also noted in the margin, having some experience with provincial and tribal intelligence, that the US decision system is still too focused on state to state Ambassadorial level negotiations, and largely ignorant of and uninterested in the nuances of sub-state tribal views and concerns. That needs urgent fixing.
3) The Special Forces, despite their reputation for fearless operations behind enemy lines, were led by officers who insisted that they wear their proper military uniforms and shave every day. I have met the two-star general that gave and then enforced this order, and consider him a superb--absolutely top-notch--officer in terms of military skills, but the man is so culturally clueless as to give new meaning to the term oblivious. As a side note, thinking back to Steve McQueen in the great escape, it occurred to me that we need to establish a protocol under the Geneva Convention in which military personnel and overt intelligence personnel can blend into the local population to avoid cultural dissonance, but wear a small patch, clearly visible to those they see face to face--something like a SOF spear, with miniature rank on one side and miniature service seal on the other side, all within a two-inch wide circle.
4) PAVE LOW missed the Landing Zone (LZ) during the first and most critical Special Operations team insertion. Now, this could have happened if CIA provided the military with the wrong coordinates (or used Russian coordinates while the Americans were on another system), but this should never have happened. It also points out that the military and CIA evidently did not have the ability to talk to each other tactically on the final approach, which reminds me of our Marines not being able to talk to the US Embassy in Somalia as they completed their 400 nautical mile run just in time to stop the people from over-running the place. How is it that something as critical as masked inter-agency tactical communications can still not be achieved? INTER-4 Tacticomps with S-MINDS and CISCO AONS for all hands ASAP.
5) Air Force blew the first food-drop, dropping the packets from 27,000 feet without parachutes. What this made clear to me is that we have a peacetime Air Force (see my review of "Rules of the Game" by Andrew Gordon) that has forgotten how to do nuanced missions, especially those requiring that they do something other than deliver cargo conventionally or drop bombs.
The author ends the book more or less on page 363, where he suggests that a combined CIA and SOF campaign circling Waziristan, is needed. While he underestimates the denied area aspect of this zone, I agree that the Pakistanis are playing the Americans for fools, and I agree that there should be no area of the world where US forces cannot operate if they must.
The author loses one star, with some understanding, for failing to provide context and failing to acknowledge that his heroic mission was required because CIA did not take Afghanistan seriously before and after Charlie Wilson. Three other books, at least, must be read to understand this:
Charlie Wilson's War: The Extraordinary Story of How the Wildest Man in Congress and a Rogue CIA Agent Changed the History of Our Times
Ghost Wars: The Secret History of the CIA, Afghanistan, and Bin Laden, from the Soviet Invasion to September 10, 2001
The Main Enemy: The Inside Story of the CIA's Final Showdown with the KGB
The compansion to this book is Jawbreaker: The Attack on Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda: A Personal Account by the CIA's Key Field Commander
I had a chance to talk to a CENTCOM officer informally about all this, and welcomed his observation that CIA does not always have the facts when it comes to their perception of military "mistakes." We also talked about the need for a new approach to global intelligence. It is crystal clear to me that we need to have CIA/SOF bases all over the world that are under non-official cover and that work every major tribe and province. For every province, including especially provinces in denied areas, there must be at least one SOF-qualified sleeper able to receive a clandestine arrival, or provide the first stop for a SAR exit.
I'm glad they made it back-this was true grit and deep honor in action.

The Longest Day: The Classic Epic of D-Day ReviewA masterful account of the first twenty-four hours of the D-Day invasion. Mr. Ryan transports the reader all over the battlefield, giving numerous perspectives (both allies and axis) to the events that unfolded on June 6, 1944.
When I was a company commander serving in Germany, I required all my company officers to read this book as part of their professional development. They all thanked me afterwards for introducing them to one of Mr. Ryan's classic WWII books.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who has an interest in WWII, or has read any of Mr. Ryan's other books (A Bridge Too Far, The Last Battle). Personally, I read this book and viewed the film (which is also a classic) before visiting the Normandy beaches. I felt this preparation made my trip to Normandy more meaningful and enjoyable. The Longest Day: The Classic Epic of D-Day Overview

The Narcissism of Minor Differences: How America and Europe Are Alike ReviewMost politically-enagaged Americans already think they know about Europe; either it's a decadent and pusillanimous continent that should serve as a warning or a more civilized and socially-cohesive place that America should aspire to emulate. Baldwin challenges these lazy assumptions with a mountain of objective data that show America tends to fall within the European range in a host of quantifiable respects. While not denying that the United States is distinct in a number of ways, the author shows convincingly that the differences between the US and "Europe" is often less pronounced than the differences between individual European countries. Perhaps the most valuable implicit lesson in the book is that "Europe" as a concept is extremely nebulous and not particularly valuable for comparisons. Baldwin's book is a quick read and though I sometime found the statistics a bit dry, his constant resort to quantifiable data keeps the thrust of the argument from becoming too subjective. I wish he would follow up his work here with a more opinionated sequel, but perhaps that would detract from the modest, objective qualities of this book. A gem.The Narcissism of Minor Differences: How America and Europe Are Alike Overview

Ideal Illusions: How the U.S. Government Co-opted Human Rights (American Empire Project) ReviewI was disappointed in this book. Unfortunately, the book isn't really writing to persuade, but takes it as a given that the U.S. has manipulated human rights and right fifty years of history from that view point. Many readers will agree with that premise, and they won't be disappointed, the history is thorough. I work professionally in human rights, and I bought this book knowing I would disagree with that premise. I do like to read books that present views differing from my own, however, and read with an open mind. Unfortunately, his chief criticism of human rights NGOs seems to be that they are not pacifist/communist organizations, and that they've limited themselves too much to political rights. Those are also the rights that the U.S. generally espouses (and used against the communists). Peck seems to see that as collusion/co-opting (whereas most find it unsurprising, as both movements arose out of the same vein of enlightenment thinking and US political thought [as opposed to the USG] greatly affected the development of human rights). In short, if you agree with the premise of the book, I doubt you'll be disappointed. If you don't think you do, this book will likely just frustrate you.Ideal Illusions: How the U.S. Government Co-opted Human Rights (American Empire Project) Overview

Red Families v. Blue Families: Legal Polarization and the Creation of Culture ReviewThis book is a wonderful read because it gives you everything you need to understand modern American families - the social science statistics, legal analysis, expert insights on culture, and a nuanced treatment of the eocnomics - and combines those diverse currents into a light, even enjoyable (given the topic under dicsussion) narrative.
The authors do an excellent job of avoiding the bile of the culture wars, and instead are able to tease out what the fundamental differences are between different conceptions of the family in America. Everyone has 'family values', and want the best for their children - the split comes over how to guarantee the best, and the role that sexuality and fertility play in different conceptions of what is the best for a family.
Here's a good discussion of some of the arguments in the book from a conservative writing for the New York Times: [...]Red Families v. Blue Families: Legal Polarization and the Creation of Culture Overview

The Mississippi: A Visual Biography ReviewThis book, the result of many years of travel and research, is one of my most treasured books. Using an antique big view camera, Quinta brings photographic images almost into 3D on these pages. Quinta uses her photos and her texts to take you to many byways, inlets, and outlets formed by or left behind by the Mighty Mississippi--places you have never heard of. She found them, visited them, photographed them, and wrote about them in this magnificent book. I have spent hours pouring over the pages and intend to spend many more hours lost in the loveliness of this book. If you are a "coffee table book" person, then you should definitely put this one at the top of your wish list. I would like to personally thank the author for such a major undertaking and the end result. The Mississippi: A Visual Biography Overview

The War Over Iraq: Saddam's Tyranny and America's Mission ReviewAs the founder of the influential conservative think-tank American Patriots who Never Fought In War But Advocate Violent Imperialism In the New American Century (APNFWAVINAC), Kristol successfully promoted the idea that a group of draft-dodging muddle-headed bureaucrats should be the main decision makers when it comes to America going to war. APNFWAVINAC made it a primary goal of the U.S. to liberate the good people of the Arab and Muslim countries that Kristol loves so much from their tyrannical leaders, just so long as none of their own children had to fight. APNFWAVINAC published the historic open letter to George W. Bush titled Bomb, Bomb, Bomb, Bomb, Bomb Iraq, advocating the violent overthrow of the Iraqi leader in order to free the good people of Iraq. John McCain used the letter as the source of a hilarious and much beloved joke during his 2008 presidential campaign.
Among the high level members of APNFWAVINAC who were signatories to the famous letter were other great intellectuals and patriots such as Paul "never served in the military but I have a girlfriend at age 62" Wolfowitz, Douglas "f***ing stupidest guy on earth" Feith, John "kiss-up, kick-down" Bolton, Dick "no bid contract for my war profiteering Haliburton pals and we're in the last throws of the insurgency" Cheney, as well as many other brilliant and highly accomplished warriors and scholars of world history and military strategy. These APNFWAVINAC members were so deeply troubled by reports of Iraqis being terrorized by Saddam that they felt they had to intervene with their carefully researched and passionately presented plea to Bush to bomb Iraq. Kristol even volunteered to join the Army in order to defend the Iraqi people that he loved so dearly and to support the military that he has revered all of his life. Even though the Army had dropped many of the enlistment requirements to attract recruits, Kristol still failed the physical because of his disproportionately large mid-region.
Kristol fought bravely for his country in Viet Nam and in the Persian Gulf (I'm guessing). And if he had children, they would have been the first to volunteer to fight and die in Iraq. He sacrificed his life and lost a large part of his brain on the battlefield in Hanoi (I'm guessing on that one too). His extended tours in both wars testify to his deep sense of patriotism and duty to his country. So when he repeatedly calls for the U.S. to go to war with Iraq, Iran, Korea, France, Germany, New Zealand, and against the radical leftists in Boston and Seattle, he is speaking as a man who has seen first-hand the horrors of war and does not make such recommendations lightly.
Although he has been wrong in every single prediction and observation he has ever publicly made, we must remember that he is a genial commentator on the FOX channel with a charming sense of humor and he is a brave veteran who served his country with great honor and continues to maintain the attractive APNFWAVINAC website calling for war with all non-American countries so we should heed his valuable, if completely wrong advice. The War Over Iraq: Saddam's Tyranny and America's Mission Overview

A Rope and a Prayer: A Kidnapping from Two Sides ReviewOn a morning in November of 2008, David Rohde a NY Times journalist, set out with an Afghan journalist to interview a Taliban commander. This was to be a safe interview, but as it is known, the risks are always there. David was kidnapped. David, the Afghan journalist and the driver were all taken by car over many hours to an unknown place somewhere in Afghanistan. David's wife of two months, Kristen, a photography director, for a well known magazine, was working on a project when she received word from David's brother, Lee, that he had been kidnapped. This is their story from each of their perspectives.
David was treated well. He was never beaten, was fed well, given water and housing but was held hostage. It is believed that the Pashtun tribe wanted to negotiate for money, millions of dollars and exchange for other terrorists. Kristen became involved immediately with the FBI, the NY times administration and owners, the State Department, security companies and various journalists and others who had been involved in previous kidnappings. Their story is one that ended happily, but the seven months that David was kept hostage were filled with woe and fear and extreme times for Kristen and their families. She spoke daily with government officials, kept in touch with family and at one point her mother came to stay with her, to help keep her spirits buoyed. Their experiences are well documented, and they both share their emotional highs and lows and how they kept themselves together.
An important aspect of this story is that David's kidnapping was kept secret. It was felt that would give them a better stance in negotiation. At one point Al Jazeera had a video that had been sent by the kidnappers and showed it on their channel, but once it was found and a request was made to redact the video, they complied. Many people knew about David's kidnapping, but they kept it close. Kristen and David's brother, Lee, became the center of the world that revolved around David. They made decisions after involving family and their close confidents. Kristen particularly felt that Sec Of State Clinton, Richard Holbrooke, their security team and friends were the most helpful throughout the ordeal. Kristen found herself sifting through all of these people and the information they supplied. They were not sure who could be trusted and as time went on, they found their way.
One portion of the book that I found most helpful is the history of Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan that David gives us. He keeps us privy to the region with his knowledge, and the history he has shared. The tribes and how they were formed and the history of the regions. It is helpful to be able to put names and tribes together with their regions. Background of the areas, the religions and the day to day tribal rituals was an added piece to try and understand, to give us a piece of how these Pakistani and Taliban live. David Rohde explains some of his beliefs and his knowledge of Pakistan and Afghanistan. David had been kidnapped years before for 10 days in Bosnia, but he found these seven months so very trying. He firmly believes that if he and Asad had not escaped, he would still be there as a hostage. In discussions after David got home, the negotiations seemed to be futile, and no one expected a positive outcome. David was held by the most hardline of the Taliban tribes. They firmly believed that they could control the entire region, they were radical in their beliefs and he is indeed lucky to have escaped.
David's escape is especially telling and forceful. The Pakistani Army received them with open arms after they understood who David was. They were very kind and generous. David was very surprised and pleased, but did not believe he was safe until the US Army flew him to Saudi Arabia. He reunited with Kristen, and they began their lives, anew.
A forceful book, full of factual history and emotionally laden at times. The day to day existence combined with the history of the region and interspersed with Kristins life in New York City. We see and understand the story from both sides, and it gives us great insight into these seven months. I find a renewed interest in the history of Afghanistan and Pakistan. A much more informed person about our war, and the people we are fighting for and with.
Highly Recommended. prisrob 12-16-10

Too Big to Fall: America's Failing Infrastructure and the Way Forward ReviewToo Big to Fall is too important not to be read by elected and government officials and anyone who cares about the health of our cities, states, and country. LePatner, by concentrating on a major element of public works--our country's 600,000 bridges, brings into focus the causes and solutions that, if followed, in the long run would actually cost less and expose us to less risk. The release of this book could not be more timely. Thousands of local and state officials are facing record deficits. The easiest areas to cut are the nearly invisible activities of preventive maintenance. No large constituencies will be marching on city halls or statehouses to clamor to save the jobs of bridge painters or oilers. But now at least government public works managers and citizens have the source to educate elected officials and their bean counters in the penny-wise-pound-foolish choice of cutting maintenance now, only to face bigger costs and higher risks in just a few years. I was in charge of New York City's bridges after the fiscal crisis of the 1970s. On my watch in the 1980s, we had fatal collapses on the Brooklyn Bridge and the elevated FDR drive, as well as emergency closures of more than a score of other bridges. LePatner offers us a better choice.

American Government and Politics: Texas Edition ReviewThe book was sent in perfect time; better than I had hoped. A minor oversight on my part; I needed the Texas edition of this book. However it has been quite useful. I would certainly use this company's service in the near future.American Government and Politics: Texas Edition Overview

Never Allow A Crisis To Go To Waste: Barack Obama and the Evolution of American Socialism ReviewI was kind of worried about reading this book. I figured it would be old hat. It's actually superb and Bart DePalma does a sensational job in explaining contemporary socialist strategy. I never knew what asymmetrical socialism was, but after reading this it explains a great deal of what's going on in 2012.Never Allow A Crisis To Go To Waste: Barack Obama and the Evolution of American Socialism Overview

Corporations Are Not People: Why They Have More Rights Than You Do and What You Can Do About It ReviewThis book should mainstream the campaign to end corporate personhood.
Clements traces the development of the legal doctrine of corporate personhood back long before the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision two years ago this month, in particular to President Richard Nixon's appointment of Lewis Powell to the Supreme Court in 1972. Led by Powell's radical new conception of corporate rights, Clements shows, the court began striking down laws that protected living breathing persons' rights in areas including the environment, tobacco, public health, food, drugs, financial regulation, and elections.
In 1978 the Supreme Court ruled that corporations had speech rights that prevented banning their money from an election, a conclusion that might have been nearly incomprehensible a decade earlier before the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and various corporate foundations began filling our public discourse with phrases like "corporate speech." In 1980 Congress forbade the Federal Trade Commission from protecting children or students from junk food advertising and sales. In 1982 corporate speech rights in the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a state law that had attempted to block energy companies from promoting greater energy consumption. In the 1990s, the Monsanto corporation, whose genetically engineered drug was banned in many countries, won the right to include it in milk in the United States and the "right not to speak," thereby overturning a law requiring that milk be labeled to indicate the drug's presence.
Decision after decision has extended corporate rights to a position of priority over actual human rights on everything from food and water and air to education and healthcare and wars. The ground has shifted. In 1971 Lewis Powell argued on behalf of the cigarette companies that they had a corporate person's right to use cartoons and misleading claims to get young people hooked on nicotine, and he was laughed out of court. In 2001, the Supreme Court struck down a state law banning cigarette ads within 1,000 feet of schools and playgrounds. The reason? The sacred right of the corporate person, which carries more weight now than the rights of the people of a community to protect their children ... er, excuse me, their "replacement smokers."
And why do corporate rights carry so much weight? One reason is that, as Clements documents and explains, "transnational corporations now dominate our government" through election spending. This is why a civilized single-payer health coverage system like those found in the rest of the wealthy nations of the world is not "practical." This is why cutting military spending back to 2007 levels would mean "amageddon" even though in 2007 it didn't. This is why our government hands oil corporations not only wars and highways but also massive amounts of good old money. This is why we cannot protect our mountains or streams but can go to extraordinary lengths to protect our investment bankers.
"Since the Citizens United decision in 2010," Clements writes, "hundreds of business leaders have condemned the decision and have joined the work for a constitutional amendment to overturn expanded corporate rights." You might not learn this from the corporate media, but there is a widespread and growing mainstream understanding that abuse by oversized mega-corporations has been disastrous for ordinary businesses as well as communities, families, and individuals. Clements' turns out to be a pro-business, albeit anti-U.S. Chamber of Commerce, book.
And what can be done? We can build an independent, principled, and relentless Occupy movement and include as a central demand the amending of the U.S. Constitution to end corporate personhood. Clements' book offers a draft amendment, a sample resolution, a collection of frequently asked questions (and answers), a list of organizations, websites, resources, books, and campaigns.
This is doable, and it is what we should do this election year so that in future election years we might actually have elections.Corporations Are Not People: Why They Have More Rights Than You Do and What You Can Do About It Overview
