Understanding Environmental Pollution ReviewI bought this book as a reference for a college project I did about air pollution. It turned out to be the most valuable resource I had. Hill presents sophisticated information in an easy-to-understand manner. This book also made me realize the huge connection between air pollution and many other issues that the world faces today, and it helped me create a straight-forward list of actions my class mates could take to lower their personal contributions to air pollution. I got an "A" on my project, and I have a much better understanding of how my everyday choices cause air pollution, the consequences of those choices, and what I can do about it.
Furthermore, even though I focused on the sections involving air pollution, this book also has great information on other types of pollution such as water and solid waste. It is a great introduction to the pollution problem and makes a wonderful resource for a project, an environmental science class, or just personal curiosity.Understanding Environmental Pollution Overview

Book Only: Nursing Informatics And The Foundation Of Knowledge ReviewI must say that nursing informatics doesn't much interest me, so that may bias my review of this book. I'm required to take a course in informatics as part of my BSN. Our professor informed us that this was the only textbook on informatics, which was why we were required to purchase it for the class.
I can hardly keep my eyes open every time I try to read a chapter, it's so dry and abstract. It's not that concepts aren't interesting, they actually are. Use of information systems in nursing and the health sciences, is absolutely the wave of the future. And looking at nurses and "information processors" and "knowledge workers" is creative and useful. But the book seems to try and use lofty academic language, big words, passive voice, and overly formal descriptions to describe simple concepts, making the reading boring and abstract. Also, when new terms are introduced, the authors don't plainly define the terms...They give long winded histories of how the terms are used, how they evolved to their current state, and what someone said about the terms, but they rarely come out and say "this is what we mean by this term". So I find that if I really want to know what a term means, I have to translate it into plain words so that it makes sense.
My professor has the previous (2009) edition and had given us study questions from that edition, without realizing that some of the topics were no longer mentioned in the latest edition. So I got online and looked up some of the answers on google books (previous edition). I was surprised to find many of the same concepts discussed in clearer language, with less wordy definitions. Not sure why you would want to take nice clear writing and muddy it all up, but that's apparently what happened. Maybe it didn't sound academic enough?
My motivation for writing a review is to encourage folks to buy the 2009 edition. If you aren't required to purchase the newest edition, I'd consider at least getting the previous edition first...it seems to be a much better read. Or you could get the 2009 edition on kindle and this edition in paper form. I would most definitely not recommend buying this book unless you are required to, or are passionate about nursing informatics and want a more current description of it in book form. But seriously, if we are talking about currency of technology, data, and information systems, why not just use the internet, proceedings of conferences and peer reviewed articles?Book Only: Nursing Informatics And The Foundation Of Knowledge Overview

Evaluating Hedge Fund Performance (Wiley Finance) ReviewI was thoroughly disappointed with the material in the book. As someone who evaluates hedge fund investments and performance on a daily basis, I am always on the lookout for new research. Wiley Books has traditionally done a very good job of publishing authors who contribute to the hedge fund investment research process. This book fails to break any new ground - in fact, it rehashes what any professional in the hedge fund world already knows. However, I did give it 3 stars because it may be useful for someone who is looking to break into the industry or is just starting out in the HF indsutry. SUSE Linux 10.0 Unleashed ReviewAfter reading the prior review about transitioning from windows to linux I wanted to revew the book. I went to borders to read it for myself. The book is accurate in its claims, though I have to say I am a bit mixed.
The book states it is not for beginners. That I would agree with. It is written for someone already familiar with linux and it regular operation. So for the review regarding transitioning from windows to linux, I would agree.
Here is what I am mixed on. The book shows the basic (and I mean basic) commands needed to perform a simple task (such as listing files in a directory), then makes blanket statements such as "be sure to execute some_command or install some_file" without stating how to find the command, how to run it, or why. From that I would gather someone familiar with linux would understand, but if they understand already then why do they need the book.
The other possibility is that this book is this authors methods for doing his setup. In which case I think it provides enough overview to help someone to do the same, but once again that person would already need the basic linux skills.
As a result I don't think the book is appropriate for me (being another person who is transitioning from windows to linux). I did find another book Linux Bible 2006 Edition : Boot Up to Fedora, KNOPPIX, Debian, SUSE, Ubuntu and 7 Other Distributions (Bible). This seems to address my needs better, it does not go into more advanced topics like this book does, but it does explain the "how to" so far. I am also ordering SUSE Linux 10 Bible (Bible) since I want a desktop machine and something that is server capable. Maybe I will come back to this Unleashed book in the future.
I would certainly say it is meant for someone with more experience.SUSE Linux 10.0 Unleashed Overview

The Clinical Nurse Specialist Handbook ReviewThe book came to me in the mail, but I can't use it. I needed the newer version for school, which I had to buy at the college bookstore. Now I'm sitting here with an extra book that has no value to me. I posted it online at Amazon.com but so far not a bite at a cheaper fee than I paid for it, and it's a brand new text. Transport Revolutions: Moving People and Freight Without Oil ReviewThis book is very readable and on target, also fully footnoted. Informed by Peak Oil in addition to global warming, the academic authors prescribe a tonic of electric rail to head off our coming woes.
This means high speed rail between cities to replace many road trips and most short haul air travel, plus urban rail systems to get around in metropolitan areas. But it also includes electric trolley buses and electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles, including trucks. Reason: electric vehicles are not only efficient, but the electricity may come from a variety of renewable sources.
However they seem to have gone overboard in regard to "grid connected vehicles" when they prescribe Personal Rapid Transit. The problem here is that PRT is mostly just a concept, backed by highly questionable simulations and cost estimates. Experts who look at the fundamentals see costs that vastly outweigh the benefits, except in very limited circumstances, such as at Heathrow. And with big declines in air travel projected, even the airport application of PRT needs to be questioned.
But Gilbert and Perl are right on target when they say that the first order of business, whether in the US or China, is to stop digging ourselves deeper in the the fossil fuel hole. An example now gaining currency in the US would be "no new general purpose freeway lanes". Another is to stop all airport expansions.
Given the vast waste and luxury in US society, the US could certainly afford the $1 trillion cost that they project for the high speed train network. But finding the political will is another matter, as the costs of food and fuel skyrocket and credit bubbles burst and wars drain resources, leaving economic decline in their wake.
Nevertheless, we need more academics joining activists to tell the world that is is what needs to be done.

Learning PHP 5 ReviewFrom the title I would have expected that the book spend all of it's slim 300 page frame on a soup to nuts language introduction. For the first six chapters it looks that way as it rolls through language basics, variables, conditionals, arrays, etc. But then it veers into the practical for the rest of the book and covers topics such as database access through Pear DB and the use of XML.
There is a lot to like about this book. The chapters are short, focused and practical. And I have no issues recommending the book on a technical level. Especially the database section which advocates simple safe SQL practices. In particular you should follow the advice on page 126 about using the '?' operator in your SQL queries.
There isn't much new for PHP 4 programmers looking to learn about PHP 5. In fact there is little or no emphasis placed on teaching you to write classes. The only information about classes is about their consumption. This is definitely not a book for the experienced PHP developer, but for a beginner this is one of the best.Learning PHP 5 Overview

I found this book to be very readable and full of pertinent information. The only potential downside is the fact that this book can easily become outdated due to changes in legislation. Policy and politics are an everchanging front. I highly reccomend this book. It helps the reader understand how we came to this point in healthcare and how we can be most effective in changing the legislative climate.
