Power for Living ReviewI got saved back in 2004 because of this little book called Power For Living. I saw this book advertised on T.V. and decided to order it. Being a divorced, single mom I suffered from a feeling of hopelessness and dispair even though I tried to hide it from others. Years earlier, while still married, I was diagnosed with what the Doctor's called 'chronic depression.' They told me I was incurable and would have to live with it for the rest of my life. It was so severe for a while that I could barely get out of bed and take care of myself or my family. I was sent to see a therapist which continued for 4 years. She was a feminist who eventually convinced me that if I got a divorce it would solve everything, since my unhappy marriage must have been to blame for my problams. So I took her advise, which I later would regret. What I discovered is that divorce caused a whole new set of problams like poverty, and trying to be a mom and a dad both at the same time. But mostly it had devestating affects on my children. The hurt and pain the divorce caused was more damage than I ever could have imagined. I felt like such a failure. I had trouble diciplining my kids. I was at work all the time and couldn't be home with them, they were failing in school and getting involved with the wrong kind of friends, even getting in trouble with the law. Then I lost my job and my apartment and had to put all my things in storage. I moved in with my boyfriend, which he only allowed because of my situation, but the whole time I was staying at his house it was obvious that he didn't really want us there, thus causing our relarionship to fall apart. One day I came to this realization that I was homesick and that I wanted more than anything to go home but I didn't know where home was. That's when God gave me this revelation that heaven was home. I started to weep, I thought God gave up on me, that He wouldn't want anything to do with me, but this experiance started to give me hope. I started listening to the christian radio programs. then one day I ran across that little blue book called 'Power For Living' in a box in my boyfriends garage. It's funny how that book was just laying in top of this box along with a bible I recieved from a friend years earlier. I had some cooking things in that box that I thought I might need at my boyfriends house but I didn't remember putting those books in there. I had ordered that book like a year earlier but never finished reading it. Now here it was. I read the book and said the prayer at the end of the book, asking God to forgive me of my sins and inviting Him to come into my heart and be my Savior. I remember a prayer in there that asked the Holy Spirit to give me understanding of Gods word as I read the bible. As soon as I started reading that bible the Lord filled me with His Spieit. I never felt such joy, such peace. That night as I lay in bed I actually heard the Lord speak to me and say "your name is written in the Lambs book of life"I have bacome a new creature in Christ, just as the word says. Now I understand what Jesus meant when He said "you must be born again". If you are searching for hope, peace, joy like I was then get this liittle book, or just pray right now and repent fo all your sins and ask God to come into your heart and save you, trusting Him alone to be your "personal" Lord and Savior. Then you will know Him, not just know things about Him. Thats the difference between being born again or just having head knowledge about who Jesus is. He is real,He is alive, and He will not turn anyone away no matter what they've done. He is no respector of persons. Why don't you call on Him today!Power for Living Overview

Left To Tell: Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust ReviewAs a survivor of the genocide of Rwanda, this book reminded me of my own ordeal during the genocide. At first I was angry with Immaculee when I read the summary of her book, how can she forgive? Then when I started reading the book, I understood, I couldn't put it down, I couldn't stop crying, so many feelings that I thought existed only during that time, came back, I felt a lot of thirst, my mouth dry as well, my heart beating very fast...however at the end of the book I felt that something great have happened to me, a HEALING. I felt an excitment to live and to dream again, to stop living in the past, it reminded me that we are all God's children and that there's always HOPE.
Thank you Immaculee, God worked through you!

The Business of Heaven: Daily Readings from C. S. Lewis ReviewOf course, in an ideal world, where we all had tons of free time to read, a book of C.S. Lewis excerpts like this would be useless. But, in the actual world, where sometimes reading has to come next to things like working, grocery shopping, and sleeping, a book like this one is quite helpful. It doesn't compare to reading each of his great works in their entirety, but the excerpts are organized very well, often by theme and/or work taken from, so there's a feeling of continuity and thoroughness. Another great thing about this book is that often with C.S. Lewis' works, the density of things to think about within the pages is so great that a lot of the cool thoughts and ideas get missed in a normal read-through. But generally in this book, each daily reading expresses a singular idea, so there is more time to really let the weight of the thought sink in, and to spend some time intellectually and emotionally digesting his words. So if you're a C.S. Lewis fan, or even just a fan of filling your brain with interesting concepts and insightful analogies, this is a must-have.The Business of Heaven: Daily Readings from C. S. The Meaning of Life ReviewI'm pretty versed when it comes to motivational and self-help books. There seems to be a trend these days that you must use at least 300+ pages to get your message across, when in reality 95% of that is just "stuffing".
"The Meaning Of Life" is a brilliant book because of it's to-the-point simplicity. Don't let the cute pictures distract you or flip through the pages so quickly; give some thought to the text. I was amazed at what this book did for me!The Meaning of Life Overview

The Road Less Travelled: A New Psychology of Love, Traditional Values and Spiritual Growth ReviewI have read many books in my lifetime but none has had such an impact as this one. This is easily, hands-down the best book of its kind. I have read Further Along the Road... by Peck and while it had useful information, it was not as informative and enjoyable as this book. ( I would also highly recommend "People of the Lie") I enjoyed the stories of his personal life as well as the patients he helped (and that had helped him) along the way. This is a serious book that still made me laugh & cry sometimes. It touches on so many issues of responsibility and discipline that no review I could write could possibly do it justice. Despite a previous reviewer's comments that this book is inaccessable- it is not! Very easy to read & not too technical. This is a book that anyone who is willing to open themselves to the pain of change & challange, will forever be changed & enriched. And the author himself admitted that any definition of Love would be subject to criticism from others- but dealing with something as nebulous and intangible, I think Mr. Peck does a terrific job. Especially when he notes what love is NOT. It has helped me to identify when someone's motives are not out of love- which seeks to help the person it touches. I really cannot think of another book that is as important as this one. Give it to a loved one as a gift--a gift they will never forget and hopefully- if they aren't "character disordered" they will see that this book can help them perhaps more than any other. The Road Less Travelled: A New Psychology of Love, Traditional Values and Spiritual Growth Overview

The Infinite Atonement ReviewMr. Callister gives us a thoughtful and lyrical view of the most important event in human history. The book is well-written and easy to understand. What I especially appreciate, however, is Mr. Callister's sensitive, obviously hard-won personal testimony of Jesus Christ. His conclusions come from years of perceptive living combined with a conscious effort to understand what it means to be redeemed. I highly recommend this book. It is one of the best efforts by any Latter-day Saint. Perhaps some of the doctrine is not familiar to people of different faiths. That does invalidate the thought and beautiful testimony of the writer. The Infinite Atonement Overview

Daily Reflections for Highly Effective People: Living the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Every Day ReviewIn response to another's review, I must rise to Covey's defense. Covey seems well aware of the "mind-numbing" avalanche of tasks and things to do that people have to deal with. Seven Habits stuff is a direct response to that. It offers a good method for really thinking about what's important to you and making time for things that really matter -- WITHOUT the "numbing." I feel the buzzwords and catch phrases are designed to make a complex approach more accessible. I really think it's unfair to ascribe evil intentions to the offer of free items. Covey repeatedly states in his books that any organizer or planner can be adapted to his philosophy, but his stuff costs about the same as any other and if you are interested in using his approach it is way handier than putting adapting another system. This particular book is just OK. If you have the planner, or the original book which is a much better purchase, I don't see the need for this.
That said, there is a lot of marketing around 7H stuff which I don't have any use for. Despitew this, if you're bitter and angry I don't suppose any self-help book will work for you.Daily Reflections for Highly Effective People: Living the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Every Day Overview

Believing Christ the Parable of the Bicycle and Other Good News ReviewI read this book at a time when the concept of the atonement was confusing. I was bothered (and would still be bothered now if I hadn't gotten the bigger picture from this book) by the "Holier-Than-Thou" attitude of a lot of members of the church. Stephen helped me understand the good news. There have been several tests in my life since then testing my testimony of the restored gospel, but I have passed through them all with confidence. No other book besides the Book of Mormon has changed my spiritual life and understanding other than Stephen's book. I highly recommend it.Believing Christ the Parable of the Bicycle and Other Good News Overview

A Rope and a Prayer: A Kidnapping from Two Sides ReviewOn a morning in November of 2008, David Rohde a NY Times journalist, set out with an Afghan journalist to interview a Taliban commander. This was to be a safe interview, but as it is known, the risks are always there. David was kidnapped. David, the Afghan journalist and the driver were all taken by car over many hours to an unknown place somewhere in Afghanistan. David's wife of two months, Kristen, a photography director, for a well known magazine, was working on a project when she received word from David's brother, Lee, that he had been kidnapped. This is their story from each of their perspectives.
David was treated well. He was never beaten, was fed well, given water and housing but was held hostage. It is believed that the Pashtun tribe wanted to negotiate for money, millions of dollars and exchange for other terrorists. Kristen became involved immediately with the FBI, the NY times administration and owners, the State Department, security companies and various journalists and others who had been involved in previous kidnappings. Their story is one that ended happily, but the seven months that David was kept hostage were filled with woe and fear and extreme times for Kristen and their families. She spoke daily with government officials, kept in touch with family and at one point her mother came to stay with her, to help keep her spirits buoyed. Their experiences are well documented, and they both share their emotional highs and lows and how they kept themselves together.
An important aspect of this story is that David's kidnapping was kept secret. It was felt that would give them a better stance in negotiation. At one point Al Jazeera had a video that had been sent by the kidnappers and showed it on their channel, but once it was found and a request was made to redact the video, they complied. Many people knew about David's kidnapping, but they kept it close. Kristen and David's brother, Lee, became the center of the world that revolved around David. They made decisions after involving family and their close confidents. Kristen particularly felt that Sec Of State Clinton, Richard Holbrooke, their security team and friends were the most helpful throughout the ordeal. Kristen found herself sifting through all of these people and the information they supplied. They were not sure who could be trusted and as time went on, they found their way.
One portion of the book that I found most helpful is the history of Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan that David gives us. He keeps us privy to the region with his knowledge, and the history he has shared. The tribes and how they were formed and the history of the regions. It is helpful to be able to put names and tribes together with their regions. Background of the areas, the religions and the day to day tribal rituals was an added piece to try and understand, to give us a piece of how these Pakistani and Taliban live. David Rohde explains some of his beliefs and his knowledge of Pakistan and Afghanistan. David had been kidnapped years before for 10 days in Bosnia, but he found these seven months so very trying. He firmly believes that if he and Asad had not escaped, he would still be there as a hostage. In discussions after David got home, the negotiations seemed to be futile, and no one expected a positive outcome. David was held by the most hardline of the Taliban tribes. They firmly believed that they could control the entire region, they were radical in their beliefs and he is indeed lucky to have escaped.
David's escape is especially telling and forceful. The Pakistani Army received them with open arms after they understood who David was. They were very kind and generous. David was very surprised and pleased, but did not believe he was safe until the US Army flew him to Saudi Arabia. He reunited with Kristen, and they began their lives, anew.
A forceful book, full of factual history and emotionally laden at times. The day to day existence combined with the history of the region and interspersed with Kristins life in New York City. We see and understand the story from both sides, and it gives us great insight into these seven months. I find a renewed interest in the history of Afghanistan and Pakistan. A much more informed person about our war, and the people we are fighting for and with.
Highly Recommended. prisrob 12-16-10
