The Narcissism of Minor Differences: How America and Europe Are Alike ReviewMost politically-enagaged Americans already think they know about Europe; either it's a decadent and pusillanimous continent that should serve as a warning or a more civilized and socially-cohesive place that America should aspire to emulate. Baldwin challenges these lazy assumptions with a mountain of objective data that show America tends to fall within the European range in a host of quantifiable respects. While not denying that the United States is distinct in a number of ways, the author shows convincingly that the differences between the US and "Europe" is often less pronounced than the differences between individual European countries. Perhaps the most valuable implicit lesson in the book is that "Europe" as a concept is extremely nebulous and not particularly valuable for comparisons. Baldwin's book is a quick read and though I sometime found the statistics a bit dry, his constant resort to quantifiable data keeps the thrust of the argument from becoming too subjective. I wish he would follow up his work here with a more opinionated sequel, but perhaps that would detract from the modest, objective qualities of this book. A gem.The Narcissism of Minor Differences: How America and Europe Are Alike Overview

Ferraris for all: In defence of economic progress ReviewIf you've ever felt guilty about the accoutrements of life in the developed world - plentiful cars, abundant food, cheap energy - economics and finance journalist Daniel Ben-Ami says to stop. He contends that society's elites are afflicted with wrongheaded ideas about how to improve the world. He argues that underprivileged countries desperately need capitalist growth to improve their people's lives, and that developed nations should try to help them boom, not weigh them down with self-denial programs. Ben-Ami's thinking and writing is spotlessly clear but unbendingly hard, and every once in a while he wanders off the path of logic. Nonetheless, he makes a formidable, controversial case. getAbstract suggests his book to corporate managers working on global outreach, economists, and big thinkers who want to ensure the invisible hand is outstretched for a leg up, not a slap in the face.Ferraris for all: In defence of economic progress Overview

Last Chance: Preserving Life on Earth (Speaker's Corner) ReviewWhen a friend asked me: "Yes but what can I do? It's *global* warming, after all," I recommended she read "Last Chance, Preserving Life on Earth." Yes, the title is daunting, but I just finished it, and this book is so readable. The author, Larry J. Schweiger, weaves his life journey through the three major parts of his book, and makes the case based on his own ethics. "Global warming will harm children on the right as well as those on the left," he writes. And then he tells readers what to do about it. "Last Chance" is an excellent contemporary read on the impact of politics on science, all in a human-sized proportion. It's about what's going on at levels greater than the reader, but, even more important, the author gives readers a role to play. We know there are problems, but don't quite know how to respond. This book is a great guide to our personal response to climate change. It includes sections called, "What You Can Do," loaded with practical, do-able actions that anyone - a child, parent or grand-parent -- can take.Last Chance: Preserving Life on Earth (Speaker's Corner) Overview

Does Foreign Aid Really Work ReviewRiddell has done an excellent job to update his earlier work - Foreign Aid Reconsidered (a seminal work) to include the massive changes in aid that have occurred in the past 20 years, especially the shift to NGOs.
His depth of knowledge, both firsthand and theoretical, of development is clear from the very start. It is clearly a very, very well researched book.
The question he aims to answer is obviously huge, and he makes it quite clear that there are no yes/no answers. He deftly avoids over-generalizing, but does an incredible job to work with the limited and biased data that exists on development.
The greatest strength of the book is really as a massive, 500 page literature review. He is able to sum up, in a very readable way, the major debates on development's efficacy. In the end, he presents a very well thought out normative set of suggestions on how to fix many of the problems he highlights about aid - a refreshing piece of concrete steps (which he admits readily are only the framework, and subject to much debate). Yet I think it's very important to point out that, despite his catchy title, this is not your run of the mill, "How to End Poverty in 10 Years With MicroHydro" book. This is a scholarly work that looks at all aspects of aid, even though it seems aimed at a wider audience. There are no easy answers, but Riddell's analysis is penetrating.
Overall, its an excellent piece of critical development scholarship, and comes highly recommended for anyone interested or involved in development, from NGOs to academia. He plows through the numerous, unfounded myths that go both for and against aid through detailed reasoning and evidence. He avoids the trivial, surface level problems and goes straight to the systemic contradictions of aid.
If I was to sum up the message of the book in a few words - and answer the question of the title - it would be that, to Riddell, aid is working, but not nearly as well as it could.
