Courage and Consequence: My Life as a Conservative in the Fight ReviewI'd recommend the book. It was not what I expected. It is clear that Mr. Rove carries a sharp blade in his robes and uses it without hesitation when he feels his interests are in danger but he does not hide it in the book which is fairly open and honest. His respect and criticism of President Bush seems soundly based, factual and to the point.
Mr. Rove really does not reveal much about his own values but does give us details about how he came to be who and what he is. He was present in the administration at its most critical points and does reveal the emotions of the moment.
If you thought he was the devil incarnate or if you thought he was Jesus returned, the book will not change that kind of rigid thinking. However, if you are a person who actually values knowing the facts, circumstances and personalities of the time in question and wish to begin forming an unbiased appraisal, it is well worth reading.Courage and Consequence: My Life as a Conservative in the Fight Overview

You Know I'm Right: More Prosperity, Less Government ReviewIf an American political candidate called for eliminating entirely the federal departments of education, commerce, energy, transportation, and housing and urban development, along with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Social Security, and Medicare, the candidate would probably be denounced as extreme.
So give Michelle Caruso-Cabrera some credit for writing a book that stakes out and defends these positions.
"Man is not free unless government is limited. There's a clear cause and effect here that is as neat and predictable as a law of physics: As government expands, liberty contracts," she writes. She does write that -- but she is quoting a January 1989 speech by President Reagan. It's a reminder that ideas that ideas that initially may seem extreme can win wide support with the right politician communicating them.
As a communicator of political ideas, Ms. Caruso-Cabrera, whose grandparents fled Cuba and Communist dictator Fidel Castro in 1962, is no slouch herself. There's a lot of policy substance in this book and a lot of clear writing and clear thinking to go with it.
On health insurance, she writes, "The debate in Washington is between those who favor employer-based health insurance and those who favor government-based health insurance." They're both wrong, she says: individuals should control their own insurance.
On ObamaCare's "new 3.8 percent tax on unearned income, which includes dividends, rents, capital gains, interest, and a host of other investment incomes," she writes, "Government will tax investment. That means we will get less investment as a result. When you raise taxes on something, you get less of it. That's how higher taxes on cigarettes are justified by politicians."
There's an excellent chapter on the credit ratings agencies. This chapter alone would be worth the price of the book for the history of what she calls the "long process that led the ratings agencies to be first regulated and then legislated into profitability."
On immigration, Ms. Caruso-Cabrera is in the camp that sees free movement of people as part of the free market: "Here are five reasons why you should embrace immigration to the United States: eBay, Yahoo, Google, and Sun Microsystems. All were founded by immigrants."
She cheapens her argument by throwing in some cheap shots at Republicans. "At least the Democrats don't hate gays and immigrants," she writes. Given President Reagan's 1986 immigration "amnesty" and the strenuous effort by President George W. Bush and Senator McCain, both Republicans, to work with Senator Kennedy to forge a comprehensive immigration "reform," it seems unjustified to accuse the Republicans of being an immigrant-hating party.
Ms. Caruso-Cabrera also fails to give George W. Bush the credit I think he deserves for tax cuts. "When it came to fiscal issues Bush was nothing but a died-in-the-wool liberal," she writes. "Tax cuts are worthless, even damaging, if they aren't accompanied by cuts in spending as well." At least such tax cuts allow the individuals who earned the money to keep it. In some cases the dynamic growth effects of tax cuts are such that spending doesn't have to be cut; a tax cut at some point on the Laffer Curve may actually produce more government revenue.
Each chapter in the book ends with a variation on the phrase, "you know I'm right," a device that I thought did not work particularly well.
The author at times expresses frustration or hostility toward the religious right, without seeming to understand that for many, religion is the basis of the respect for individual human liberty and property rights that Ms. Caruso-Cabrera is such an articulate and passionate defender of.
On the whole, though, Ms. Caruso-Cabrera has written a lively and provocative book. With it, she joins Larry Kudlow (who writes a foreword to this book), Tea Party inspirator Rick Santelli, and Net Net blogger John Carney in the ranks of CNBC staffers who have been forthright about their free-market leanings. Fox Business network, meanwhile, is assembling its own staff of libertarians, including John Stossel and Judge Napolitano. So if ideas like eliminating five cabinet-level departments along with the SEC, Medicare, and Social Security seem remote from the mainstream of our present political debate, well, you never know.

The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands ReviewFirst, let me say that I am a very independent, very headstrong, liberal wife who has a higher education than her husband (masters' degree), owns a business and takes no B.S. from anyone. When this book came out, I truly thought it was a joke. WHO WOULD WRITE A BOOK LIKE THIS OUTSIDE OF THE 1950s?! And WHERE IS THE "PROPER CARE... OF WIVES"?! To add 'insult', a coworker of my husband (whose wife stays at home with their 4 kids because they feel that this is THE role wives are SUPPOSED TO take on), is the one who offered to lend it to me. I thought, "this will be interesting" but can't criticize until giving it a shot, right???
Ok - there's the background - here's the review:
I couldn't put the book down and read it in a just over a day. While I don't agree 100% with all that Dr. Laura says, and as another reviewer commented that there are parts that men may find insulting, this book has changed my life, and as a result it has changed my husband's life - both for the better. After 7 years of marriage, we are clicking like we never have before. I can't explain it to you, or to my married best friends whose jaws dropped as I confessed to them over margaritas that I NOT ONLY READ the book but I LOVED the book.
All I can say is that the foundation makes sense. It doesn't bash working women - Dr. Laura is one, after all. But it does point out, not so discreetly, that your family - the family you have chosen to create - should come above all else. And that the EXTREMISM of some aspects of the feminist movement is self-destructive to women, men and society as a whole.
And as I turned each page and as I tried to rebel against some parts (I shouldn't BURDEN him with the tales of MY day??!), peel away the layers, let down your defenses and let it make sense. (It isn't that my day is less significant, but men and women communicate differently - vent to him about your day and he'll feel like a second class citizen and a failure for not being able to fix your stress. Vent to your girlfriends and they'll dish with you! Focus your time on your husband, family, relationship, etc., once you get home instead.) AND LET ME TELL YA once you leave the work day at the door, your home becomes YOUR HOME again, too. So it's win-win! REALLY!!!
Dr. Laura's book includes parts and pieces of past calls and letters, which is a helpful, practical demonstration of her points and breaks things up so you don't feel like you're getting a lecture (especially if you are ready to admit you've been doing a few thngs wrong!). And as you can see the lightbulb go on with average Janes all over the country and across time in the dialogue- from them pushing back on her advice to (aha!) getting her message during their conversations, you see the pettiness we can cling to and frankly, the underlying simplicity in each of her messages.
OK - still skeptical? Then rent it at the library for free and give it a shot. Just TRY to put her ideas into practice - commit to changing for a week (if you aren't sold on changing your life)... What's the worst that can happen? If it's all wrong for you, you have just lost a quick week and you can pat yourself on the back for being right and you can write your own book. ;-)
But just think - what if it WORKS?! Then you will find a new meaning in your life that you didn't know you were missing. You will have a much happier and rewarding marriage. Your husband will adore you. (Sounds rough, huh?)
TRUST ME - I'm not about to become a submissive, mindless person rather than an equal partner in a relationship. But as I made a few MINOR tweaks in how I treat the man I chose to marry and spend the rest of my life with, I have received rewards from him 10-fold. And to think I thought I was doing it 'right' all along. ;0)

The United States since 1980 (The World Since 1980) ReviewThis book isn't what I expected. I wanted more facts and information on how the middle class has lost ground since 1980. This book is a good overview of government policy for the past twenty five years. You walk away from this book with a good overview of history. I'm going to have to dig a little deeper for the actual data that this book was based upon.
I'm a huge Dean Baker fan. Most economists are slaves to their perspectives. It's really hard to get good economic and fiscal views outside the corporate American view. Baker allows us to be free.
Baker predicts a recession this year because of the housing bubble. Lets see how accurate he is. I'm betting on Baker. Don't bank on the Wall Street guys, they seem more interested in protecting their clients than getting you truth.The United States since 1980 (The World Since 1980) Overview

Liberty and Tyranny: A Conservative Manifesto ReviewI've been a Democrat for as long as I can remember. I am not a far left liberal, or a "Statist" as Mark would say. I do wonder though if Mark thinks all Democrats are Statists. I consider myself a Democrat simply because I am a little left of center, I am more conservative when it comes to fiscal matters and liberal when it comes to social issues. But as a Democrat, I enjoyed this book and I urge other people who may not see themselves as Conservatives to have an open mind and read this book. It is very well written and Mr. Levin makes many great points. If you're not a Conservatives, this book will not change your views overnight, so don't worry. Also, this book is not "Republican propaganda" as other reviewers, who probably didn't read the book, have labeled it. However, this book might open your eyes to things you never thought of before. The War Over Iraq: Saddam's Tyranny and America's Mission ReviewAs the founder of the influential conservative think-tank American Patriots who Never Fought In War But Advocate Violent Imperialism In the New American Century (APNFWAVINAC), Kristol successfully promoted the idea that a group of draft-dodging muddle-headed bureaucrats should be the main decision makers when it comes to America going to war. APNFWAVINAC made it a primary goal of the U.S. to liberate the good people of the Arab and Muslim countries that Kristol loves so much from their tyrannical leaders, just so long as none of their own children had to fight. APNFWAVINAC published the historic open letter to George W. Bush titled Bomb, Bomb, Bomb, Bomb, Bomb Iraq, advocating the violent overthrow of the Iraqi leader in order to free the good people of Iraq. John McCain used the letter as the source of a hilarious and much beloved joke during his 2008 presidential campaign.
Among the high level members of APNFWAVINAC who were signatories to the famous letter were other great intellectuals and patriots such as Paul "never served in the military but I have a girlfriend at age 62" Wolfowitz, Douglas "f***ing stupidest guy on earth" Feith, John "kiss-up, kick-down" Bolton, Dick "no bid contract for my war profiteering Haliburton pals and we're in the last throws of the insurgency" Cheney, as well as many other brilliant and highly accomplished warriors and scholars of world history and military strategy. These APNFWAVINAC members were so deeply troubled by reports of Iraqis being terrorized by Saddam that they felt they had to intervene with their carefully researched and passionately presented plea to Bush to bomb Iraq. Kristol even volunteered to join the Army in order to defend the Iraqi people that he loved so dearly and to support the military that he has revered all of his life. Even though the Army had dropped many of the enlistment requirements to attract recruits, Kristol still failed the physical because of his disproportionately large mid-region.
Kristol fought bravely for his country in Viet Nam and in the Persian Gulf (I'm guessing). And if he had children, they would have been the first to volunteer to fight and die in Iraq. He sacrificed his life and lost a large part of his brain on the battlefield in Hanoi (I'm guessing on that one too). His extended tours in both wars testify to his deep sense of patriotism and duty to his country. So when he repeatedly calls for the U.S. to go to war with Iraq, Iran, Korea, France, Germany, New Zealand, and against the radical leftists in Boston and Seattle, he is speaking as a man who has seen first-hand the horrors of war and does not make such recommendations lightly.
Although he has been wrong in every single prediction and observation he has ever publicly made, we must remember that he is a genial commentator on the FOX channel with a charming sense of humor and he is a brave veteran who served his country with great honor and continues to maintain the attractive APNFWAVINAC website calling for war with all non-American countries so we should heed his valuable, if completely wrong advice.The War Over Iraq: Saddam's Tyranny and America's Mission Overview

It gives vast number of facts and details. As an example, the discussion of Panetta discusses his dangerous ideas. In 1991, I was a computer scientist working for Computer Science Corporation in Monterey, CA. The project was to develop a database of weather data from all points on earth, including oceans. The government was in daily control, and the project was terribly inefficient. I visited my Congressman, Leon Panetta, and complained. My impression was that his office was very busy, but nonsense busy. He just brushed me off, causing me to lose all respect for him. I am certain that anything that he is in charge will fail. Klein's book gives important details about Panetta. Now I understand why he acted this way. His goal was big government, even if it meant things not getting done and problems not being solved. He did not care if this database, vital for weather predictions, would succeed. All that he cared for was big government.
Some reviewers complained that the book could have discussed this or that. Of course. The point is the details for anyone wishing to fight the evil Progressive movement destroying America, my country. This book will help voters fight for freedom.
This book is full of factual details. We need to understand the thinking of Progressives, which is dangerously illogical. Rational thinking requires two things: The thoughts must make sense starting from clearly stated principles. Secondly, the conclusions must agree with empirical evidence. This is the nature of the scientific revolution of the past several centuries. See for example Rational Thinking, Government Policies, Science, and Living.
Progressivism is a rejection of the scientific revolution. The ideas do not make any sense, and there is no evidence to support this nonsense. The book Red Army gives many important facts helpful to anyone who wishes to contribute to the future of America, returning our country to the ideals of freedom that launched our country and have been successful making it great for Americans and, consequently, the rest of the world.

Broke: The Plan to Restore Our Trust, Truth and Treasure ReviewBroke, the latest release by Beck, is a surprisingly entertaining text to
be sure. It's engaging, easy to read and designed as an unapologetic
agenda...Beck style. It's also packed full of information that is sure to
create a "teachable moment" among even the most vocal opponent. As a college instructor and business writer, Beck is one of the personalities that tends to draw a lot of attention and followers/critics; for that reason I attempt to stay somewhat up to date with what he/others are doing however, I'm not a "fan" of Beck per se. Although I consider him in the realm of "entertainer" rather than serious economic or political leadership, Beck has done a very real service with the publication of this book if for no other reason than the historical and educational value of the first 2/3 of the book. Also, despite the fact that this is an early review of the book (versus my own personal opinion and/or agenda), please note that this is a verified purchase unlike others. If you want to debate the pro's and con's of the "agenda", the tea party, republicans vs democrats, liberals versus conservatives etc...this is NOT that review.
Basics About the Book
First of all, this is a 400 pages of facts, figures, charts, explanations,
history, examples and action-steps. It contains plenty of resources, ample
visual impact and a clear concise style that encourages the reader to
continue reading. This is the hardcover version with dust-jacket and I'm
happy to say that it was well designed for maximum readability and
audience appeal. Whether you are the type that sits down and reads 400
pages at once or just likes to browse a bit here and there, this book will
work equally well. Plenty of conversation with oodles of tidbits and
factoids.
Who Should Read
Beck Critics - Those that dislike Glenn Beck will not be disappointed - he
provides plenty of fuel to fire-up even the most reserved of his critics.
In fact, even hard core Beck advocates are likely to take issue with a few
items here and there due to "spin" so commonly used by Beck when
interpreting information and data. Like the old adage, there are lies,
d-mnded lies and statistics...the cited data is often used for/against
both sides of a debate, definitions are distorted to the benefit of both
sides and the usual chicanery is alive and well throughout the book. Yes,
I cringed at times but let's face it, that is a daily event for most
Americans that haven't already tuned out entirely. Critics of Beck will
find ample opportunity to criticize the details, the proposed plan of
action and even the man himself. However, there is a good chance that even
the most critical opponent of Beck will actually learn something from this
book! It is interesting and packed full of relevant historical detail as
well as food for thought.
Beck Fans - If you enjoy Beck, this may be his best book to date. It's
packed with information and is unapologetic in the proposed agenda set
forth. It's funny. It's informative. It's entertaining. It's educational.
Without a doubt you will want to buy a copy for yourself, a couple to loan
out to friends and at least one to keep on hand for naysayers and critics.
Unless they are so closed to anything other than their very own agenda,
every thinking person is likely to find something of interest in this
book. Yes, there is slant or angle but that is true of every "side". What
does come through (quite clearly) is the position taken by Beck and his
supporters as well as the reasons and rationale. Agree or disagree, it's
worth reading.
Teens & Those New to Politics, Economics, Tax Issues etc. - Anyone with an
open mind is likely to enjoy this book even if you don't agree...or
actually disagree...with Beck and his conclusions. This would be a great
tool for teens, home schooler and others that would like to initiate an
open conversation about what it taking place (or not) in this nation. The
historical perspective alone is well written, filled with facts and open
enough to spur endless debate.
What is Covered
With over 400 pages packed to the brim, this book provides a big bang for
the buck! It's roughly divided into three parts:
Part I - Part I begins with ancient history, the foundation of this
nation, monetary policy of Hoover, FDR, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush II and
now Obama.
Part II - Covers the crime of the century, the cover up and "the murder
weapon".
Part III - The Plan. This is Becks' call for action, response to critics
and his understanding of the role religion, government, family etc plays
in shaping our nation.
