Crisis: Cause, Containment and Cure ReviewI like this book. I have read a number of books on the financial crisis and the Great Recession and this is the best of them. It comprehensively, but succinctly, analyses the causes of the crisis, the actions that the authorities in the US and Europe have taken to contain it, and progress that has been achieved through early 2011 on measures to reduce the chances and severity of future crises. Working in the U.S. financial services industry during the S&L crisis and subsequently as a senior regulator in the UK's Financial Services Authority (FSA), and with a rare command of both academic and policy analysis, the author is unusually well placed to command crisis events in both Europe and the US.
In his analysis of the causes of the crisis, the author seeks to find what went wrong and thus needs to be fixed. In doing so he avoids the pitfall of so many analysts in the US who make political points by placing the blame on either greedy bankers or ideologically driven governments that reward their supporters at the cost of their country's needs. The author `s description of crisis responses is enriched by examining the reasons for the US authorities, especially the Federal Reserve's slowness to respond in the early stage of the crisis. He blames a universal flaw in economic models that treat the financial sector as a passive transmission channel for policy stimuli rather than as an active, but flawed, player in the process.
Encompassing actions both in the US and in Europe enhances the author's analysis of progress in fixing the faults in the system. The chapters on failed bank resolution and regulatory reform encompassing the Basel Committee's introduction of revised capital standards and new liquidity requirements are particularly rewarding.
The book is well written, has a minimum of end-notes so that the reader is not forever scrambling to recover his place, but has an excellent list of references. Ending early in 2011, the book does not deal with the euro crisis, which can be perceived as the next phase of the crash that began in 2007. Perhaps the author will follow this up in a third edition of the book. Yet the book, as currently written, satisfied my hope that it will allow me to enjoy learning something new. I will give it as a gift to my friends.

The Big Thirst: The Secret Life and Turbulent Future of Water ReviewAs an editor in the pulp and paper industry, I'm aware of what our own industry is doing to use less water and recycle and reuse the water that it does use. But this book has given me a much broader view of the water issue thanks to Mr. Fishman's clever writing, excellent research, and fascinating stories drawn from his global travels. He has achieved the seemingly impossible by writing an entire book about the single topic of water, and making it fascinating reading. I'll never look at or think about water the same way again, and I've already found myself looking for little ways in which I can reduce my use of this precious resource.
This should be required reading for everyone.

Mission-Critical and Safety-Critical Systems Handbook: Design and Development for Embedded Applications ReviewOnce again Kim Fowler offers a book that is packed with valuable, practical information for building real systems, in this case, embedded computer-controlled systems that can affect the health, safety and welfare of the public. The contributors all have deep experience in building and delivering these kinds of systems - not just studying them from afar. One of the biggest problems with books purporting to offer guidance on building real-time systems, critical systems, etc. is that the authors often have never actually built such systems. When building these kinds of systems, experience is the best teacher, and this collection of studies embodies a great deal of real-world experience.
The set of case studies selected is appropriate, covering medical systems transportation systems, infrastructure control systems, military systems and more. Much of the focus, appropriately, is on effective requirements elicitation and analysis - it is well known that failures in mission critical systems are largely due to errors in requirements engineering. Another important focus of the book is on regulatory compliance, which imposes an additional degree of difficulty for mission critical systems.
This book is a must have desk reference for those building mission critical software systems. It can also be used as a classroom text for courses in real-time systems or embedded systems.

The Shadow World: Inside the Global Arms Trade ReviewJust got done with the book and I simply can't comprehend the extent of corruption related to this trade. It is amazing that despite the trove of evidence cited in the book and how brazen and complete the violations are, nothing meaningful has been done to-date to stop these crimes. It's mind boggling to read about the radar equipment sold to Tanzanian air force that has 8 planes at cost equivalent to the amount spent on health or how South Africa is paying for planes it didn't want or need in the first place. After Daniel Yergin's book on Oil, this is one of the most comprehensively researched book that I've read. Amazing job by the Author who am sure is risking a lot by exposing these corrupt regimes and corporations around the world. Great job and I'd highly recommend it to anyone interested in reading about this truly shadowy world of Global Arms Trade. Simply amazing book and yet another example of the power of corruption.

Corporations Are Not People: Why They Have More Rights Than You Do and What You Can Do About It ReviewThis book should mainstream the campaign to end corporate personhood.
Clements traces the development of the legal doctrine of corporate personhood back long before the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision two years ago this month, in particular to President Richard Nixon's appointment of Lewis Powell to the Supreme Court in 1972. Led by Powell's radical new conception of corporate rights, Clements shows, the court began striking down laws that protected living breathing persons' rights in areas including the environment, tobacco, public health, food, drugs, financial regulation, and elections.
In 1978 the Supreme Court ruled that corporations had speech rights that prevented banning their money from an election, a conclusion that might have been nearly incomprehensible a decade earlier before the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and various corporate foundations began filling our public discourse with phrases like "corporate speech." In 1980 Congress forbade the Federal Trade Commission from protecting children or students from junk food advertising and sales. In 1982 corporate speech rights in the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a state law that had attempted to block energy companies from promoting greater energy consumption. In the 1990s, the Monsanto corporation, whose genetically engineered drug was banned in many countries, won the right to include it in milk in the United States and the "right not to speak," thereby overturning a law requiring that milk be labeled to indicate the drug's presence.
Decision after decision has extended corporate rights to a position of priority over actual human rights on everything from food and water and air to education and healthcare and wars. The ground has shifted. In 1971 Lewis Powell argued on behalf of the cigarette companies that they had a corporate person's right to use cartoons and misleading claims to get young people hooked on nicotine, and he was laughed out of court. In 2001, the Supreme Court struck down a state law banning cigarette ads within 1,000 feet of schools and playgrounds. The reason? The sacred right of the corporate person, which carries more weight now than the rights of the people of a community to protect their children ... er, excuse me, their "replacement smokers."
And why do corporate rights carry so much weight? One reason is that, as Clements documents and explains, "transnational corporations now dominate our government" through election spending. This is why a civilized single-payer health coverage system like those found in the rest of the wealthy nations of the world is not "practical." This is why cutting military spending back to 2007 levels would mean "amageddon" even though in 2007 it didn't. This is why our government hands oil corporations not only wars and highways but also massive amounts of good old money. This is why we cannot protect our mountains or streams but can go to extraordinary lengths to protect our investment bankers.
"Since the Citizens United decision in 2010," Clements writes, "hundreds of business leaders have condemned the decision and have joined the work for a constitutional amendment to overturn expanded corporate rights." You might not learn this from the corporate media, but there is a widespread and growing mainstream understanding that abuse by oversized mega-corporations has been disastrous for ordinary businesses as well as communities, families, and individuals. Clements' turns out to be a pro-business, albeit anti-U.S. Chamber of Commerce, book.
And what can be done? We can build an independent, principled, and relentless Occupy movement and include as a central demand the amending of the U.S. Constitution to end corporate personhood. Clements' book offers a draft amendment, a sample resolution, a collection of frequently asked questions (and answers), a list of organizations, websites, resources, books, and campaigns.
This is doable, and it is what we should do this election year so that in future election years we might actually have elections.Corporations Are Not People: Why They Have More Rights Than You Do and What You Can Do About It Overview
