Power for Living ReviewI got saved back in 2004 because of this little book called Power For Living. I saw this book advertised on T.V. and decided to order it. Being a divorced, single mom I suffered from a feeling of hopelessness and dispair even though I tried to hide it from others. Years earlier, while still married, I was diagnosed with what the Doctor's called 'chronic depression.' They told me I was incurable and would have to live with it for the rest of my life. It was so severe for a while that I could barely get out of bed and take care of myself or my family. I was sent to see a therapist which continued for 4 years. She was a feminist who eventually convinced me that if I got a divorce it would solve everything, since my unhappy marriage must have been to blame for my problams. So I took her advise, which I later would regret. What I discovered is that divorce caused a whole new set of problams like poverty, and trying to be a mom and a dad both at the same time. But mostly it had devestating affects on my children. The hurt and pain the divorce caused was more damage than I ever could have imagined. I felt like such a failure. I had trouble diciplining my kids. I was at work all the time and couldn't be home with them, they were failing in school and getting involved with the wrong kind of friends, even getting in trouble with the law. Then I lost my job and my apartment and had to put all my things in storage. I moved in with my boyfriend, which he only allowed because of my situation, but the whole time I was staying at his house it was obvious that he didn't really want us there, thus causing our relarionship to fall apart. One day I came to this realization that I was homesick and that I wanted more than anything to go home but I didn't know where home was. That's when God gave me this revelation that heaven was home. I started to weep, I thought God gave up on me, that He wouldn't want anything to do with me, but this experiance started to give me hope. I started listening to the christian radio programs. then one day I ran across that little blue book called 'Power For Living' in a box in my boyfriends garage. It's funny how that book was just laying in top of this box along with a bible I recieved from a friend years earlier. I had some cooking things in that box that I thought I might need at my boyfriends house but I didn't remember putting those books in there. I had ordered that book like a year earlier but never finished reading it. Now here it was. I read the book and said the prayer at the end of the book, asking God to forgive me of my sins and inviting Him to come into my heart and be my Savior. I remember a prayer in there that asked the Holy Spirit to give me understanding of Gods word as I read the bible. As soon as I started reading that bible the Lord filled me with His Spieit. I never felt such joy, such peace. That night as I lay in bed I actually heard the Lord speak to me and say "your name is written in the Lambs book of life"I have bacome a new creature in Christ, just as the word says. Now I understand what Jesus meant when He said "you must be born again". If you are searching for hope, peace, joy like I was then get this liittle book, or just pray right now and repent fo all your sins and ask God to come into your heart and save you, trusting Him alone to be your "personal" Lord and Savior. Then you will know Him, not just know things about Him. Thats the difference between being born again or just having head knowledge about who Jesus is. He is real,He is alive, and He will not turn anyone away no matter what they've done. He is no respector of persons. Why don't you call on Him today!Power for Living Overview

Love in 90 Days: The Essential Guide to Finding Your Own True Love ReviewWell, here's a disclaimer. I'm a cynic, a misanthrope and pessimist. Why on earth would someone like me even attempt to date? More puzzling, why would I pick up a dating book? Got me. I got lucky with Getting Naked Again: Dating, Romance, Sex, and Love When You've Been Divorced, Widowed, Dumped, or Distracted and I recommend it, but this book practically made me gag.
As you might guess from the title, it's an action plan and workbook all rolled into one. There is fairly solid typical advice that even I have heard before: positive thinking, putting yourself out there, go where the boys are, date a pair and a spare, etc.
Where it all falls apart is in the specifics. The author has a fairy-tale-ish, saccharine writing style that I couldn't cope with. Your significant other or spouse is the "Beloved" or "The One". Your relationship role model is your "Master Love Mentor". I'm sorry, but every time I see that it makes me think of dungeons and dominatrices! As part of the positive thinking angle, she advises the reader to choose a secret, special name for herself that will make her feel wonderful, unique and loved. Examples are "Princess Thus-and-such" and "Duchess Twinkle-toes". Not really. But along those lines. Again, I'm sorry but I'm 40 years old, not 4. I'm looking for a man with a job and a brain - not a frog in a golden crown that burps up fairy dust.
Also, I found the book a bit disjointed. I kept skipping around because I'd bump into sections that seemed irrelevant and the author encourages you to jump ahead and read specific sections relevant to your situation.
The only redeeming quality of the book is the last part that discusses the qualities of happy marriages. It was the only section that didn't have me groaning and rolling my eyes.Love in 90 Days: The Essential Guide to Finding Your Own True Love Overview

The Road Less Travelled: A New Psychology of Love, Traditional Values and Spiritual Growth ReviewI have read many books in my lifetime but none has had such an impact as this one. This is easily, hands-down the best book of its kind. I have read Further Along the Road... by Peck and while it had useful information, it was not as informative and enjoyable as this book. ( I would also highly recommend "People of the Lie") I enjoyed the stories of his personal life as well as the patients he helped (and that had helped him) along the way. This is a serious book that still made me laugh & cry sometimes. It touches on so many issues of responsibility and discipline that no review I could write could possibly do it justice. Despite a previous reviewer's comments that this book is inaccessable- it is not! Very easy to read & not too technical. This is a book that anyone who is willing to open themselves to the pain of change & challange, will forever be changed & enriched. And the author himself admitted that any definition of Love would be subject to criticism from others- but dealing with something as nebulous and intangible, I think Mr. Peck does a terrific job. Especially when he notes what love is NOT. It has helped me to identify when someone's motives are not out of love- which seeks to help the person it touches. I really cannot think of another book that is as important as this one. Give it to a loved one as a gift--a gift they will never forget and hopefully- if they aren't "character disordered" they will see that this book can help them perhaps more than any other. The Road Less Travelled: A New Psychology of Love, Traditional Values and Spiritual Growth Overview

Encore: Finding Work that Matters in the Second Half of Life ReviewLike many books targeted to mid-life professionals, Marc Freedman addresses retirees who are physically and financially in a position to make choices. He makes an appealing yet dangerous assumption: Older people will be drawn to opportunities where they can make a contribution. They're more concerned with contributing than earning. They're cooperative, not competitive.
To be sure, many people over 40, 50 or 60 are eager to help. Many want to be teachers, nurses and social workers. But some of us are just not suited to the helping professions. And some of us actually believe that, no matter how old we are, we want to get paid based on contribution. We want to get raises, rewards, promotions and perks.
One reason so many mid-life career changers end up self-employed is that there's no other way to follow the profit motive. I recently met a lawyer who finished law school in his late 40's. Now in his early 60's, he has always worked for himself and done very well in a niche specialty. If he tried to work for a law firm, he'd be lucky to get hired as a part-time paralegal.
Along with the nurses and teachers, Freedman introduces us to a former teacher who now works as a greeter at Wal-Mart. Unfortunately, these stories reassure potential employers: "See, older people don't care about money or status."
Freedman provides a list of resources. Instead I would encourage mid-life career changers to seek one-to-one consulting from career coaches or else undertaken their own programs. If you're considering a business, go to the SBA or take entrepreneurship classes.
Towards the end of the book, Freedman identifies elements of the infrastructure (taxes, health insurance and more) that no longer make sense and actually harm older workers. He quotes statistics showing that older workers use health care "1.4 to 2.2 times" as much as younger workers. It's not clear what orders of magnitude are associated with those numbers. I buy my own health insurance (you can always choose to opt out of an employer's system) and pay very little because I have a big deductible. I've reviewed several books, here on amazon, that encourage everyone to take a skeptical look at those "essential" medical tests.
Bottom Line: Encore features some very impressive baby boomers who have made significant changes in their lives. Those who want to work for money fulfilling social responsibilities by donating to worthy causes, will have to look elsewhere.

Practicing the Power of Now: Essential Teachings, Meditations, and Exercises From The Power of Now ReviewSince the content of Tolle's books has been covered well elsewhere, I'd like to address the person new to Tolle and wondering where to begin.
In my personal experience, if I could only afford to purchase one book, I'd start with PRACTICING THE POWER OF NOW. I feel that it essentially restates the material found in the original POWER OF NOW but in a format I found easier to digest. I don't see much point in owning both books (which I currently do.)
If you connect with PRACTICING and want more, then I'd recommend the audio book/retreat Realizing the Power of Now: An In-Depth Retreat With Eckhart Tolle. (It's less than $10 if you purchase the audio file from Audible.) I'm only half way through listening yet I constantly find myself thinking "Ah...now I understand what he meant." It truly is an excellent supplement.
There is one more Tolle book here, STILLNESS SPEAKS. I borrowed this from the library. It's basically just out-takes from the other books, sort of a quotable quotes book that restates things in a nutshell. It would make a nice gift to a Tolle fan, but again, doesn't offer anything more than the other books. I suppose my message is: everything you need to know is in the original POWER OF NOW, stated perhaps more clearly in PRACTICING and excerpted in STILLNESS but supported well in audio format by the retreat CD.
I find Tolle's basic message very powerful, enlightening and simple. As he himself constantly repeats, he's not saying anything new...be here now. But he explains it in a way which finally connects the dots for me. Unfortunately, this simple message seems to be getting constantly repackaged and I hope it doesn't turn into a "Chicken Soup for the Enlightened Soul" series. (I should probably go make sure that's not the title of an actual book! )

Codependent No More: How to Stop Controlling Others and Start Caring for Yourself ReviewInstead of spending hours of your time, expressing how anxious and depressed I was, and for so many years, I'd share a few things that might tell my story of recovery in a more concise mode.
I had everything but had nothing. I had been Senior Class President, Top 2% in the Country during College, successful in modeling and acting, selected as Volunteer of the Year for the State of Iowa and the list of "stuff" could go on an on. I was so empty inside myself that I didn't any longer know how I felt inside. I was losing any sense of who I was.
I'd become someone that functioned to serve, protect, nurture, encourage, forgive and love someone that couldn't love back. I was with the same person, in a marriage, for almost 5 years, and woke up one morning and realized that the person next to me was a stranger who didn't know the real me. The person that my life revolved around, the person that I chose to take care of and "cover" for, just liked having me around so I could pick up the pieces and paint a picture of a relationship and a family that was like "Ozzie and Harriet" so that others would think that everything was just fine. I can't stand the word "fine" anymore. Nothing in my life was fine and it wasn't until I hit bottom and read "Codependent No More:How to Stop Controlling Others and Start Caring for Yourself", that my life began to change. The book answered all of my questions and caused me to look deeply at myself and my situation and evalute how sick I was. Yes, I was the sick one in the relationship too.
I thought that I was doing everything right or doing what was right for my relationship. But I didn't ever consider that my own personal cup was empty and the only person who could fill it with healthy things was me. I didn't know that I was controlling others as I only saw myself as a caring and loving person. What had happened is that I went overboard-WAY overboard to the point that I had stopped eating, started using pills to medicate my pain and refused to make changes in my life.
I was scared. I didn't want to be alone in life. What I didn't realize is that I was already alone. I wanted to love and be loved. After reading this incredible book, I realized that I wasn't being loved. I was being used and abused and I needed to hit this emotional bottom before I would accept help. My therapist advised me to purchase "Codependent No More", by Melody Beattie AND to read it. I almost felt odd going into the self-help are of the book store. Little did I know that the healthiest place in any book store is the aisle that reads "Self Help"!
I owe my life to this book and I thank all of the wonderful people who contributed to the stories in this book, that allowed me to move out of my relationship and to enter a long recovery period. I am still in the care of a therapist. Sometimes I act in a codependent fashion. The difference, however, is that I now see red flags that prevent me from getting too deep into relationships that I reach a point where I lose myself.
I offer this review to you as a gift. May this book help you, no matter what your circumstance, and may you take hold of your life again. You deserve to learn how to care for yourself. You deserve to be loved and to learn how to accept the beauty that comes with a healthy relationship.
My Warmest Regards to ALL!

Who Moved My Cheese: An Amazing Way to Deal with Change in Your Work and in Your Life ReviewI found this book to be yet another one of those books churned out by the machines of middle management, and handed down to the employee. Most of these books BECOME best sellers because they are sold in bulk to corporations for pennies on the dollar. Notice how this book has "companion" pieces of merchandise, like games, a web site, and training seminars? They are selling a complete product line to ineffective management, and look at the book as more of a large business card/advertisement.
This becomes evident when you read the stories and parables that surprise me that it took two authors to write only 96 pages. The writing is haphazard, poorly edited, unhelpful, sends mixed signals, and boils down to a rather insensitive "Things change, get used to it, change or you will die. Now keep moving." I would never give this to an employee, because that would be like giving an employee a stick of deodorant and wondering why they've stopped talking to you. This book does not care about the reader, and if I got it, I'd think, "Is my boss telling me to move on?" Comparing people to mice, and life's goals to cheese is patronizing to anyone with a sense of self-awareness. The motivational parables are generic, and seem out of place to the rest of the scare tactic this book is.
There are better motivational books out there that are written by experienced people who have good ideas that are helpful, not doom-obsessed. This book is more of a poke in the back with a sharp stick than a carrot on the end of s string, or a light at the end of the tunnel. In fact, this book might as well say, "You better not go to the light at the end of the tunnel, it could go away at any moment, and then where will you be?" Like another reviewer here said, "[the book] offers no answer other than you've got to go out and find more 'cheese" for yourself.'" Anyone who has reached the age of adulthood, and doesn't realize that change is inevitable will certainly never get the message from this book. And those that do know will only think this book is redundant and almost encouraging bitterness. I don't know what the point of this book really is, except as some sort of gloomy pap.
This book is already mostly used up, and will never be remembered like Zig Ziglar or Thomas Harris. Scout around, and find some older books, by successful people (like people who have actually succeeded in life that you have heard of), that have been around for a while. People still buy them for a reason.Who Moved My Cheese: An Amazing Way to Deal with Change in Your Work and in Your Life Overview

Life Strategies: Doing What Works, Doing What Matters ReviewEach of us has the power to make those decisions which ultimately determine the course of our precious lives.
"Life Strategies" is one of those rare finds, a self-help book that does not wallow in big words or esoteric concepts. Mr. McGraw outlines his steps for success in life in simple, direct, yet engagingly written chapters. The organization of the book is excellent throughout and reflects an author who has had extensive experience in dealing with people from all walks of life. He deals with concepts such as self-reliance, individual responsibility and similar notions often downplayed (or ignored outright) by other authors seeking to play into the culture of victimization. You will find none of that in Mr. McGraw's book; his main theme is that we are responsible for our own lives and we do not have to allow ourselves to be knocked about like a punching bag on a windy day.
Once you pick up the book, it is difficult to put down; you will find yourself nodding your head at what you have always known in your heart, but do not always acknowledge in your daily life. This book is well worth the time.Life Strategies: Doing What Works, Doing What Matters Overview
