The Ultimate Weight Solution: The 7 Keys to Weight Loss Freedom ReviewI think that based on the numerous one-star reviews I read those checking the postings may be confused. So, as a long-time past student (11 years) whose curriculum has been in medical studies and clinical nutrition, here are a few facts to make it easier on you.
1) Most dieticians I have encountered in my life have neither been thin, nor obese. However, they have been overweight. Well, 9/10. It is a fallacy to believe that just because you know something, you will apply it. I tell you, many cardiologists emphasize the need for any physical activity, yet fall short of carrying out their own advice, just like many MDs are not shying away from alcohol consumption, low fat foods, and smoking, which they all know is wrong. So, saying that Dr. Phil is overweight and that as a result, he should not be writing about weight loss strategies is plain ignorant. He is 6'4" and weighs 240lbs. Now, he is, indeed, overweight. Someone of his stature based on the dietetic currents 16 from Ross Labs in Columbus Ohio (reference used in clinical nutrition) is considered overweight.
2) The title of the book reads "ULTIMATE WEIGHT SOLUTION: THE 7 KEYS TO WEIGHT LOSS FREEDOM". It is NOT passed as a diet book. And though you may read on and see people's main critique that they have not learned nothing new does not mean that it is bad. We all know we should be eating less. We all know we should be more active. We all know that fat is not great (though necessary to some extent). The real question is to figure out whether we are actually applying that wise wisdom? Well, are YOU? If not, maybe you just find it hard to do it with your stressful life, your busy occupations, your family responsibilities. And that is where this book comes in, because it hands over strategies for you to incorporate those skills in your life. Now, note also that he does not mean to make you skinny or thin. He wants you to lose weight that you are suffering from, no more, no less!
3) Many claim that he is not an MD. And indeed, he's not! However psychology is the study of how the mind responds to certain stimuli. While an MD (psychiatrist) is focusing on physiological changes, Dr. Phil approaches from a psychosocial front claiming that by changing a few things in life, the emotions that lead you to eat less can be isolated and dealt with step by step.
4) about complaints that there is no weight loss plan, here is a newsflash! That is exactly what has made the USA as fat as it is. Lasting weight loss takes time and dedication. There is no ONE weight loss plan that fits all. Whoever tells you that is a fallacy. You may want to believe it because it is easier to deal with than to look at one's life and feel like a failure. Think about that too. You have to come up with your own needs based on your lifestyle, family life...
This being said, I don't deny that with some experience you can come to the same conclusions. However, I think that many people are stuck in a maze not knowing what to believe. This is information you can believe. It is important to eat less and encompass some physical activity. However, for the critic about the lack of physical activity that you may read in other postings, the person should have been a little more in tune with the fact that weight loss is the ultimate goal to prevent further cardiovascular diseases, diabetes diagnoses (type 2) skeletomuscular problems. Muscles weigh a lot. Dr. Phil's goal is to lose weight. Once you have got that one down, he tackles the physical activity. Remember, walking 5 times a week for 30 minutes allows you to lose 20 lbs without changing anything else in your diet. Now, I am sure it is not that hard to realize that a lot of people may be wondering where that 30 minute time frame is coming in. And that is where Dr. Phil comes in by showing you the strategies to allow such a routine to take place. The Ultimate Weight Solution: The 7 Keys to Weight Loss Freedom Overview

Let's Play Doctor ReviewAfter listening to Wallach's "Live doctors do lie tape" I was expecting huge insights in this book. As a long time alternative medicine advocate and long time member of the Life Extension Foundation the insights were not earth shattering but good basic principals and practices. The fourth edition was published in 2000 but there are some discrepancies between the book and Wallach's tape, e.g. the book recommends maintaining a cholesterol level of 180-200 mg/100ml blood whereas the tape 200-250 ? I was also surprised that tylenol was recommended for anything.Overall an excellent addition to one's medical library and I believe Dr. Wallach's message is definitely important-M.D.'s certainly are not "invincible gods" and the average American needs to become aware of the undue influence the drug industry has on standard medical practice in America.Let's Play Doctor Overview

Shopping Our Way to Safety: How We Changed from Protecting the Environment to Protecting Ourselves ReviewI worry about my family's health. I buy organic food, I use "green" cleaning products, and I buy bottled water. But I have always had an uncomfortable feeling that these choices were woefully inadequate to protect them and the planet we inhabit.
Reading "Shopping Our Way to Safety" showed me how my efforts are "sold" to me, along with the belief that I can protect my family by being a conscientious consumer. Szasz explains that individual consumption not only doesn't make us safer, it masks the true problems of the toxins that fill our environment. What will make a difference is when we all work together to impact policy changes to address these huge problems.
After reading the book, I notice examples of Szasz's theory of the inverted quarantine everyday. Yesterday, and I am NOT making this up, I saw a TV ad for a product that removes toxins from your body through the bottom of your feet while you sleep!
"Shopping Our Way to Safety" gave me a framework to understand how we got into this environmental mess and how we can get out of it. It is easy to read and filled with a fascinating history of how many of us came to believe that we could ignore the rest of society while imagining that we could protect ourselves. Szasz never pontificates nor slams you with dense sociological theory. He does explain the race and class dimensions of the problem and gives you plenty of sources for more information. Easy to understand.
After reading this book, I donated money to my local environmental justice group and our state-wide occupational health and safety organization. I plan to work with both of them to protect people from workplace toxins and to demand cleaner air, cleaner water, and non-toxic food and goods, not only for my family but for all of us.Shopping Our Way to Safety: How We Changed from Protecting the Environment to Protecting Ourselves Overview

Honest Medicine: Effective, Time-Tested, Inexpensive Treatments for Life-Threatening Diseases ReviewI've had the privilege of reading this book prior to publication, so I know what a tribute it is to patients and their families, who have fought to receive the best possible treatments for a variety of conditions. Like Julia herself, those who contributed their stories to this book faced sure defeat when searching and fighting for effective treatments for serious conditions. But despite the odds, these individuals kept going.
These treatents are not so-called "alternative therapies," so easily dismissed by conventional medicine. For example, the ketogenic diet for juvenile epilepsy has been around for decades, as has LDN, low-dose naltrexone, found to "stop MS in its tracks." (It's that, and more, including inexpensive!)
This is not a dry text...Julia had produced a true book of the heart, born of painful experience as an advocate for her late husband, Tim Fisher, whose story is told in this book. Julia's struggles illuminate issues we face as individuals and as a society. The book does no less than raise challenging questions about the future of healthcare in this country and questions the over-reliance on big pharma and institutional medicine and research. Honest Medicine makes a strong case for educating ourselves and forming alliances with individuals like Julia and the others in her book. Together, we can change medicine one brave patient and one open-minded, pioneering doctor at a time.

Understanding Environmental Health: How We Live in the World ReviewI used this textbook for the environmental health core class at my school of public health, and found it to be excellent--probably one of the best textbooks I've seen in 2.5 years of graduate school. I had the advantage of having the author as my instructor, but even without Dr. Maxwell teaching the course the book would have been just as useful. First, it's extremely well-written, which should be a given for any textbook but usually is not the case. The fact that she makes few, if any, grammatical errors and writes in a very clear manner makes reading material that is not intuitive a lot easier. Second, she incorporates figures, diagrams, and graphics nicely to add to the text. Some books seem to add graphics just because they think they should, but they don't really add anything content wise. Third, she has an extensive glossary of terms for virtually every major concept introduced in the book, which is incredibly helpful if you're trying to study this material.
I don't agree with the review that says she doesn't talk enough about regulation. This is meant to be an introductory level textbook, and the outline of regulatory bodies and what they oversee is sufficient for the purposes of an introduction. Environmental health policy is not necessarily straightforward, and an in-depth discussion should be saved for a more advanced or policy-specific course.
Finally, I think that the concepts presented in this book are essential for everyone to learn. Things like the environmental toxins in every day products we use, the food we eat, etc. should be a part of general curriculum so that people are aware and can make informed decisions as to how they want to live their lives. Also, the lack of sustainable modern day practices and the impact on future generations is important information for all of us, and this book gives a nice overview of both the problems and potential solution. I found myself feeling grateful that this was a required course for my graduate program, and that I had such a great textbook to facilitate learning the material.Understanding Environmental Health: How We Live in the World Overview

Collateral Damage: A Patient, a New Procedure, and the Learning Curve ReviewI finished this book over a week ago and have been trying to formulate my feelings about it, for which there are many, and many are very disturbing ...
When I go to a doctor, I must assume that he/she is competent and honest. I don't think these are unrealistic assumptions. But after reading "Collateral Damage," my viewpoint and my trust have been deeply and profoundly changed. What happened to Pam and Dan Walter should not happen to any of us. If mistakes are made, people of good faith, integrity and professionalism should step up ... not cover up. The patient is the victim and should not be made the villain. Yet that's exactly what happened to Pam. My heart goes out to her.
When medicine, ego, technology, and profit merge, the alliance is tainted, the system is compromised and the patient is at risk. That's exactly what happened to Pam. She didn't have a chance. Johns Hopkins' reputation is well-known. Soon Hugh Caulkins' reputation will be known as well. And perhaps the millions of dollars they receive in research money will be questioned as will their reputations. As it stands now ... we the people must speak up! Tragedies like this should not happen. And if mistakes are made, then physicians ought to take responsibility. After all, isn't the oath they take to do no harm? Someone should remind Hugh Caulkins of that.
This story is about Pam and Dan Walter. Yet it could be me or you! I was reading this book while my husband was waiting to see his cardiologist. I'd just finished reading a portion of the book that suddenly played out in front of me!!!! The cardiologist, who is treating my husband for afib, started sounding like a character in this book! I said to myself, "are you freaking kidding me?" It was all eerily familiar to Pam's story in the ease at which ablation was swiftly and easily woven into the discussion as if it were the natural progression of treatment.
Thanks to Dan Walters' book, we were armed with independent studies about the dismal record of ablation for afib. The doctor dismissed our research as worthless unless it was from the medical establishment. Interestingly, the study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). Still, it was disregarded. And so was the cardiologist's recommendation for ablation.
I am so sorry that Pam and Dan Walter had to endure this tragic event. But if it's any solace, their story helped our story end in a positive way. So Pam, your suffering has had meaning and purpose. Dan, your work is stunning, your writing is extarordinary, and your research is impeccable. Thank you for sparing us what you and Pam have long endured.Collateral Damage: A Patient, a New Procedure, and the Learning Curve Overview

Understanding Global Health (LANGE Clinical Medicine) ReviewI chose this book as a textbook for an undergraduate summer course on global and public health. The book is probably among the best available and I found it providing the level of information needed for a short course. The chapters are short enough to each be read in a couple of hours or so making them good homework assignments. The book covers the main areas of global health. Some chapters would have benefited from expansive discussion such as the environmental health chapter that focused on water quality and sanitation or infectious diseases chapter. Topics of tobacco or chronic diseases are not covered or missed from the book. But in all, this is a good book and written in an easy and understandalbe language even for the lay person and I would recommend it.Understanding Global Health (LANGE Clinical Medicine) Overview
