The United States since 1980 (The World Since 1980) ReviewThis book isn't what I expected. I wanted more facts and information on how the middle class has lost ground since 1980. This book is a good overview of government policy for the past twenty five years. You walk away from this book with a good overview of history. I'm going to have to dig a little deeper for the actual data that this book was based upon.
I'm a huge Dean Baker fan. Most economists are slaves to their perspectives. It's really hard to get good economic and fiscal views outside the corporate American view. Baker allows us to be free.
Baker predicts a recession this year because of the housing bubble. Lets see how accurate he is. I'm betting on Baker. Don't bank on the Wall Street guys, they seem more interested in protecting their clients than getting you truth.The United States since 1980 (The World Since 1980) Overview

As Blahous points out in this short book, the PBGC currently faces a projected net present value deficit of $21 billion in its single-employer pension program. Blahous does an excellent job describing how structural factors greatly inhibit the PBGC's ability to effectively protect the interest of pension plans and the American workers who are depending on those pensions for a secure and dignified retirement.
In Pension Wise: Confronting Employer Pension Underfunding - And Sparing Taxpayers the Next Bailout, Blahous walks through the technical reasons behind the PBGC's worsening deficits, describes how the Pension Protection Act (PPA) of 2006 corrected some serious shortcomings to ensure pension plans are adequately funded (though continuing problems still remain), and explains the moral hazards that PBGC insurance places on the pension system in general. Blahous concludes with some general principles for pension reform and a discussion of the implications surrounding whether the PBGC shortfall should be funded with taxpayer dollars or by the pension plan community.
This is a very good primer for anyone interested in understanding the pension crisis facing the PBGC.
