Alfresco Enterprise Content Management Implementation: How to Install, use, and customize this powerful, free, Open Source Java-based Enterprise CMS ReviewThe target audience of the book appears to be a technical person who is evaluating and getting started with Alfresco. The core strength of this book is as an aid to explore the functionality of the Alfresco web client and to learn how to configure and extend it. As with most Java applications, most of Alfresco's behavior is managed through a series of XML files. The examples of how to manipulate these files in the book and as part of an accompanying download are very good. And when you go through these exercises and open up the files you can't help but notice other settings that might be useful to modify as well. I think it would be helpful to discuss the underlying technologies that support the Alfresco platform and also tips for tuning the software to meet the performance and availability demands of an actively used implementation. But those topics might be more appropriate for an advanced book. J2EE Platform Web Services ReviewThis is clearly not a how-to book for the programmer tasked with the creation of a simple web service that needs to be up within a couple days. There are no long pages of code reprints or on-liner "Hello-world". No, this book is better seen as a concentrate of experience from people involved in designing large scale enterprise class services. Reading this book is akin to peeking into their notes at the end of the project: business cases, use cases, technology overviews and systems diagrams are the type of material the author has assembled.
The book covers Web Services from the perspective of Sun's architecture, tools and technologies in a vendor neutral fashion. Considering the title, this should not be a surprise for anyone. After a review of the notion of services as well as the enabling technologies (XML, UDDI, SOAP, WSDL, ebXML, Service Registries), the author describes some best practices and reference designs that were successful on some large scale projects mixing services, legacy systems and the internet.
The book will particularly appeal to the managers who want to understand why web services should be on their radar screens, and the architects who will design the solutions. I particularly enjoyed the diagrams which give a very good high level view of the problems at hand, as well as list of references at the end of each section. These are usually a good addition to the book's content for people wanting to dig deeper. Altogether this is the type of book I like, where the author clearly exposes the forces and risks of each proposed solution.J2EE Platform Web Services Overview

It is organized to get you up-and-running with the TINI microcontroller board by Dallas Semiconductor in no time. This board has Local Area Network (LAN) and communications ports built-in so it can act as a mini HTTP, FTP and Telnet server. The authors describe how to set-up a JAVA application developement system for the TINI board (or JAVA programming in general)under Windows and Linux. The book is written for someone who is familiar with JAVA to use the web-server aspects if TINI, but the programs presented in the book are explained in great detail so that any reader can easily understand the programs' flow and purpose. The last half of the book describes the many ways that the real-world can be connected to the TINI board. These sections require some electronics knowledge to connect the hardware, but the software to use the hardware is explained in an easy-to-understand format and the circuits are simple and easy to expand. This book is a great Internet device primer and reference resource. There is so much good information in this book you will be going back to it again and again for information and design inspiration. The rest of the book follows suit, including the tables that list different management systems. All direct from Wikipedia.
The book itself says as much on its very first page:

Combine the advantages of up-to-date and in-depth knowledge with the convenience of printed books.
...
The content within this book was generated collaboratively by volunteers. Please be advised that nothing found here has necessarily been reviewed by people with the expertise required to provide you with complete, accurate, or reliable information. Some information in this book may be misleading or simply wrong. The publisher does not guarantee the validity of information found here."
There you have it, straight from the horse's mouth so-to-speak.
Now I see value in the idea of taking up-to-date information (Wikipedia), slapping it into a typesetting program and printing it out for people. Some like the tactile feel of flipping the pages--I get that.
My beef with this book is that the disclaimer I have copied for you does not appear anywhere in their description on Amazon. I think this is tremendously misleading. If I knew upfront that the book is just a Wikipedia re-print I would have never purchased it.
For example, here is a snippet of the book description on Amazon:
"This book explains in-depth the real drivers and workings of Web Content Management Systems (WCMS). It reduces the risk of your technology, time and resources investment decisions by enabling you to compare your understanding of Web Content Management Systems (WCMS) with the objectivity of experienced professionals."
Experienced professionals?? Where??!
"Some information in this book may be misleading or simply wrong. The publisher does not guarantee the validity of information found here."
How do I reconcile these two quotes? If I can't trust the content in the book, how does it reduce my risk? Quite the opposite.
If you like your Wikipedia in print format, you might consider buying this book. Otherwise, continue your search. Groovy Programming: An Introduction for Java Developers ReviewShort, plain, concise presentation of all features of Groovy, much in K&R style, without too many words and too much philosophy. I have both books, i.e. this one and "Groovy in Action". "Groovy in Action" concentrates on design goals and philosophy, and is more about using the language than about language itself. Reading "Groovy in Action" is fun, but when I do programming I have "Groovy Programming" on my desk all the time. And use it quite frequently.

Hibernate Search in Action ReviewI just finished reading Hibernate Search in Action, and I loved it. I should point out that I was the porter of Hibernate Search to NHibernate Search, so I had some previous expertise in the topic. In addition to that, I approached this book at an angle completely orthogonal to the expected audience. Unlike most "in Action" books, I did not intend to make immediate use of the code and approaches suggested in the book. Instead, I looked to the book as a way to deepen my understanding of the tool and how it works.
I am impressed, massively so, that it did so well in this regard for someone who has gone through the entire source code of the project several times.
I'll not bore you with the actual details, you can get the actual content summary of off the site. From my perspective, after reading this book I know that I am going to take a completely different approach for most complex search scenarios, and I think that I have the practical theoretical knowledge to deal with it.
I highly recommend the book if you actually need to deal with Hibernate Search, but I would recommend it to people who are not using it, because it contains some important eye opening concepts if you are not used to full text search tools capabilities. As a nice bonus, I was able to take the information in the book and use it to discuss a problem the customer was having, ending up with something that I consider far superior of the solution that they currently employ.Hibernate Search in Action Overview

Java Soa Cookbook ReviewThis book is intended for experienced Java developers and architects who need to know the details of SOA development with the Java programming language and associated technologies. It is not a very good big picture book on SOA. For that I recommend Service Oriented Architecture with Java: Using SOA and web services to build powerful Java applications, which was published in 2008, so it is still current in its approach.
To get the most out of this book the author assumes specifically that you are familiar with Java SE 5 or 6, servlets, JSP Enterprise Edition containers such as Glassfish, Enterprise JavaBeans, as well as JDBC, JNDI, EARs and WARs, and XML. In short, the author assumes that you have been involved in enterprise development using the Java technologies and APIs mentioned. If you have used web services but not recently, this book does help you get your feet back in the water. It is those that are complete novices that will get truly lost.
Parts of the book address strategy, design, and patterns, but largely it is a book that stays at a low level. A really good book on SOA design patterns is SOA Design Patterns (The Prentice Hall Service-Oriented Computing Series from Thomas Erl). The author also talks about SOA and Ruby, Python, and .NET. However, it is not necessary to have a background in these languages since Java is specifically the language and environment that the author addresses.

Practical Eclipse Rich Client Platform Projects (Expert's Voice in Open Source) ReviewI've found few RCP or SWT books that are worth much.
ERCP Projects is the perfect kind of book for Java developers who are bootstrapping into RCP work. It doesn't presume a lot of knowledge but isn't dumbed down to the point of inanity. Since the book is based around projects in a cookbook style, it gives great bits of code examples which work as starting points.
This is the kind of book which perfectly compliments the sort of material you can find in the Help, the API and on Google but doesn't replicate that information. The only complaint I have is not with the book itself but with buying it through Amazon for the Kindle. Since I work as a software developer it is common for others to ask if I have any information about some aspect of development. I can't lend the Kindle copy in any fashion.
Even that might be acceptable if I could cut & paste code snippets but the freakin' Amazon desktop book reader will not allow it. Bogus.
In the future I'll buy PDFs from individual publishers or buy paper copies. This one, for example, is directly available from Apress as a PDF book.
