Document Control ReviewThis is a straightforward, clear overview of document control. I think it is especially useful for presenting document control concepts to those whose primary function is not document control but who are being asked to comply with such a program. The book was shorter than expected, and one may need to look beyond this book for more detailed instruction in implementing a large-scale document management or document control program.Document Control Overview

MadCap Flare for RoboHelp Users ReviewClearly written, concise and to-the-point: a superb introduction Flare both conceptually (how it differs from RoboHelp) and tactically (how to use its features if you're used to RoboHelp). It exemplifies well written, no nonsense technical writing. One of the best aspects of this book is that it honestly compares the two help authoring systems and helps you weigh using one over the other. Excellent shortcut lists, a handy task index (and nice task orientation for the whole book), and a lovely, usable index. A must-have for any user considering Flare.MadCap Flare for RoboHelp Users Overview

Web Application Design Patterns (Interactive Technologies) ReviewThis book is well organized. It contains useful information from a user advocate and graphic artist perspective (much of it is just common sense). It is not at all what I expected. I am disappointed; I was misled by the title.
As an application developer - when I think of design patterns, I think of relationships and interactions between classes and objects in the code (i.e. Factory Pattern, Decorator Pattern, Observer Pattern, etc). The 'Security' and 'User Authentication' topics in this book are all about how it looks on the page. This book is about UI design. The title does not fit with the content - in my opinion.
If a web application were a car - this book would be all about paint jobs. There is nothing 'under the hood'. It has nice pictures but has little to offer in terms of content for a serious application developer.

Introduction to Search with Sphinx: From installation to relevance tuning ReviewIntroduction to Search with Sphinx is a short (127 pages in the e-book edition) text describing some of the potential uses for the Sphinx search server. After a brief exposition on the "world of text search", which defines some search-related terms and concepts, it's off to install Sphinx and perform required configuration, then delving into running searches, index maintenance and ranking results.
Note that if you are using a Linux variant to follow along, the system-supplied Sphinx packages may be quite far out of date, and you may desire or need to compile Sphinx from source. In that event, some of the configuration directives in the book may also not align precisely with reality. Experienced users should have no difficulty, novices may be confused.
An available MySQL installation is necessary to complete the examples as given, although they can be run on other datastores with some configuration work.
This book will get you up and running quickly, just don't expect great depth in any area. The provided example code worked in all cases which I tested (primarily command-line client) , although due to version differences the output differed slightly from the text in some cases.Introduction to Search with Sphinx: From installation to relevance tuning Overview
