Drupal Web Services ReviewDrupal Web Services provides clear instructions for installing a number of different web services in your Drupal site. This book is geared to the person who knows how to set up a basic site, but does not require any advanced Drupal knowledge or programming experience. Each chapter goes through one or more services, including a brief background on the service, and in some cases its history and purpose, and continues with step-by-step instructions for adding it to your site, including detailed screen shots. There is also a chapter that discusses the Services module and how you can use it to build your own web service modules.
Disclaimer: I received a free review copy of the ebook. I installed several of the services and they all worked as advertised.
Pros:
-Instructions are very easy to follow
-You will be able to add a great deal of functionality with very little pain
-Various options for each service are discussed
-Many of the chapters are standalone, so if you just care about the Facebook service described in chapter 11, you don't need to read all of chapters 1 through 10.
Cons:
-This is for Drupal version 6, and many of the required modules have not yet been updated to version 7
-The high-level description of web services is in text, with no diagrams to aid in understanding the messages that pass between the cooperating sites
-This book mentions specific versions of modules to use, which means it could become dated very quickly, although later module versions will probably be similar.
-The authentication section in the last chapter is confusing. On page 259, it says "we're going to enable this module and test the process with other applications including Twitter and Digg." It then describes a complicated Twitter/oauth configuration (after a previous chapter already covered Twitter and oauth), and ends the chapter with "You have completed the authorization configuration for OAuth Connector with your Twitter application. Now, it's time to test the connection." - without saying how to test the connection. There is also no mention of Digg.
I recommend this book to Drupalers who have a specific need to add one or more of these web services to their Drupal version 6 site. It's worth browsing if you think you might want to add a service, or if you are considering writing your own web service module to understand the tools offered by existing modules.Drupal Web Services Overview
