The Cluetrain Manifesto: The End of Business as Usual Review
There is one great thought in this book, i.e. that the Web makes it possible for everyone to participate in the "great conversation", and that it is the summing and slicing of these conversations that will drive business in the 21st Century.
The authors are quite correct, and helpful, when they point out that in the aggregate, the combined preferences, insights, and purchasing power of all Web denizens is vastly more valuable and relevant to business decisions about production, quality, and services than any "push" marketing hype or engineering presumptions about what people might need.
Sadly, the authors' neither provide an integrated understanding of the true terrain over which the great conversation takes place, nor do they provide any substantive suggestions for how web content managers might improve our access to the knowledge and desires that are now buried within the web of babel. Their cute "tell a story" and equally cute advice to have big boxes for customer stories in the forms provided for input, simply do not cut it with me.
This book is a 5 for the one great idea, a 2 for beating the idea to death, a 3 for presentation, and a 4 overall because it was just good enough to keep me reading to the last page.The Cluetrain Manifesto: The End of Business as Usual Overview

Well, I can tell you after one quick read that the new how-to book INTERNET RICH, by 16 year web selling veteran Mike Bray, and his writing partner, webmaster and ebook publishers L. J. Martin, is a straight-forward 1,2,3 method of using the internet to its best and most efficient effect. Bray's longtime perfection of Search Engine Optimization has evolved into a specialty that works for selling books (which this manual expounds upon) or selling baked goods or Bollywood movies or bat repellant. As they both say, "after all, selling is selling." And short of marrying a "royal" how else can you get your face, and your product, in front of a billion buyers?
The nuts and bolts of eBook and print-on-demand is covered. Social media is also dealt with, not only the why, but the how, with step-by-step detail of utilizing LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and others to build a dedicated list of followers for whatever your website and social media pages are pushing. In fact List Building is a chapter. And the purchase of the book gives you access to the book's webpage, which allows you to "cut and paste" many lists and resources.The links to the website, other pertinent sites, and the glossary are worth a hundred times the price of the book, available as a Kindle eBook, on SmashWords, and Nook...or in print from Amazon. Get onboard this e-ticket internet ride, or be left behind. Like they say, they can show you how, but the work is up to you!

Burgett lists the steps he took and the venues he used to publish his own books, but his helpfulness breaks down in some of the specific steps--as if he were the manager overseeing the project and someone else actually did the work--like formatting a book for Kindle. On the other hand, with his extensive experience, perhaps the process, which was new to me, was so second-nature to him that those missing steps didn't occur to him to include. Loved it! Are you new to doing business online? Are you maybe already online, but you have outsourced much of your online presence and work there to others, and now you want to get more involved and maybe do it yourself? Well look no further for that introductory book that will provide introductory blurbs on all kinds of topics you will need to learn about. Each blurb is well written and informative AND provides links to further information or good resources for you to use. My recommendation is not to use the recommended resources as a complete list. Instead, use the list to give you ideas to search out more similar sites and resources so you can become an expert on the topic yourself.
There are 78 chapters/topics covered in this wonderful little book. My favorites were as follows:

Googlepedia: The Ultimate Google Resource (3rd Edition) ReviewAs webweaver and search optimizer for my company, I'm always on Internet information overload. There's a lot to be said for any book that gives me ready access to the many topics I need to access only occasionally, as well as the many others I didn't even know I needed to know about. This book excels at taking you into the confusing fine points of using Google. Blogger tags vs. HTML? I finally got it. Self-hosting your blog? Got that, too. The subtleties of sitemaps ... at last! Yes, with a great deal of effort and eye strain you could find much of this information on Google itself. I, for one, am happy to have so much information compiled and printed next to my workstation and to have the author's knowing voice guide me over the speed bumps. A good investment because of the hours of searching it saved me, though probably doomed to a short shelf life. Google Apps For Dummies ReviewFull Disclosure first: I was the tech editor for the book.
The authors have done a great job of introducing some of the best tools that Google has made available to the public for FREE. I will admit that I thought there was no way you could pull me away from my Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) but I'm a convert now.
The books covers:
* Gmail - Google's email application and one that I'm 100% switched over to now.
* Documents - the word document application that I'm using right now to collaborate on a writing project with 2 other authors.
* Google Spreadsheets - the spreadsheet application which, no surprise, gives Microsoft Excel a run for its money
* Google Presentations - a slideshow application similar to PowerPoint
* Google Page Creator - a webpage design tool
* Calendar - a full-fledged online calendar that you can share with others or keep private
* More - coverage of Chat, Administering your Google Apps, manipulating files, etc.
For me, I use Google Gmail, Calendar, and Spreadsheets exclusively. I still need Word occasionally, but with the ability to import and export to and from Google Documents, I really haven't had any major issues yet with moving back and forth.
One caveat - Google Apps is CONSTANTLY being updated; the Google Apps team of developers seems to release updates and new features almost weekly or monthly, so use the book as an introduction but don't be surprised if there are undocumented features you come across that aren't covered in the book - probably not the author's fault as they can't predict every new feature.
Recommendation - Try out Gmail and Calendar first... then Documents, Spreadsheets, and Presentations. Once you're comfortable using Gmail and Calendar, you'll start to understand how nice it is to have all your data available on any Internet-connected PC. I'm actually able to leave my laptop home when I visit family because I can use their PC to access my email, calendar, and most of my work documents.
Favorite Feature: The ability to text-message my Google Calendar with an appointment and the Calendar auto-updates. PLUS I've configured it to text me two reminders: 1 text message a week before the event, and 1 text message the day before. All covered in the book.

Advanced Web Metrics with Google Analytics, 2nd Edition ReviewAdvanced Web Metrics is an outstanding book. It covers from shallow to Deep Ocean and gives the necessary tools to navigate through waves, tempests and calm seas. And it shows the reader how to find islands of insights!
Brian Clifton describes techniques that will help you understand and improve your website using Google Analytics. He goes over very important concepts and questions that are usually misunderstood: Why Web Analytics is important & what are the available technologies? How Google Analytics works & how it deals with privacy? Which reports should you use & how to do it? How to ensure that your data is accurate & how to enhance your reports using advanced implementation techniques?
The book is not a theoretical read; it goes into real world tasks and shows the reader what he needs to know in order to succeed using Google Analytics. In addition to showing all there is to be shown on Google Analytics, he also provides some very useful examples on third party applications that use the Google Analytics API and out of the box integrations with other tools or sources of data (CRM, call tracking, Website Optimizer).
But the biggest quality of this book is the way Dr. Clifton approaches the subject. Even readers acquainted with Google Analytics and optimization techniques described in the book will find insights that will help them understand the subject deeper and organize the knowledge in their brains.Advanced Web Metrics with Google Analytics, 2nd Edition Overview

Google Apps: The Missing Manual Review§
This Google apps book has more of a user focus and a bit more hand-holding than other Google app books I have taken a look at lately. (Google Apps Hacks)
The 13 chapters are divided into 4 parts:
1) Setting up with Google and using the word processing, spreadsheet and presentation creation software.
2) Using Google e-mail, communication and calendar applications.
3) Customizing the Google home page and creating Web pages without HTML knowledge with the new Page Creator.
4) Using Google applications within organizations. This last section went into administering users and facilitating team collaboration. This was interesting and something I had not seen in other books.
This "Missing Manual" is pretty thorough and has a good index. If your goal is to *use* Google applications (rather than program them), this book is an excellent reference and guide.
