Engineering Documentation Control Handbook, 2nd Ed.: Configuration Management for Industry ReviewThis book explains the theory but includes plenty of examples of how to set up an Engineering Document Control, or Configuration Management (CM) system. The examples in the text focus on an imaginary manufacturing company. The text does include some mention of tailoring a CM system for software developers.
The text is crisp and the books organization clear and logical. One of the last chapters includes what is essentially a checklist of how to put together a CM system.
This is not a one size fits all system. The user must use the material in the book as a guide to tailor a CM system to their company's requirements.
Overall an indispensable book for someone trying to set up or overhaul a CM system. I highly recommend it.Engineering Documentation Control Handbook, 2nd Ed.: Configuration Management for Industry Overview

The Great Bridge: The Epic Story of the Building of the Brooklyn Bridge ReviewIt is hard for me to be objective about this book. First off, I am a great admirer of David McCullough's histories. Second, I have published two novels which are set in New York during the mid-19th Century. But what probably makes it hardest for me to be objective is that I have walked over that bridge for my own personal pleasure so many times over the decades that I consider it an old friend. It's my bridge.
Having said all that, I can say that Mr. McCullough has written a history that is not only about a bridge and its builders, which are fascinating subjects in their own right, but it is also about what New Yorkers were thinking back then. This was still a horizontal world; the era of early skyscrapers was a few decades away. Because of this and the rapid growth in population after the Civil War, Manhattan was mostrously choked by block after block of four- and five-story tenements, warehouses and factories. The need for a reliable means to get to the vast open spaces of Brooklyn was urgent. Ironically, however, it wasn't the horizontal--the length of the bridge--which stunned the witnesses to the construction. Instead they marvelled at the height of the towers and the height of the roadway over the East River.
Not as ironic, however, were the people who didn't marvel at the bridge's beauty and the strength of its construction. They were too busy licking their lips, wringing their hands and wondering how much of the bridge's budget would make its way into their wallets. The elements of corruption, then as now, always lurked near a great public work in New York. McCullough covers this tainted side just as carefully as he reports on the glory of the growth of the bridge. Heroes (the Roeblings) and villains (Tweed & Co.) abound, while New York's most beautiful and efficient structure comes to life.
I've been as honest as possible. I recommend this book highly to anyone with an interest in engineering, New York history, or just a good story with great characters.

The Department of Mad Scientists: How DARPA Is Remaking Our World, from the Internet to Artificial Limbs ReviewFirst, this is a "people" book more concerned with the personalities that created DARPA than what has come through the doors of DARPA that has contributed to the technological advancements for both the department of defense and the public-at-large. He seems concerned that the reader not only understand the individuals but how clever he has been in being able to gain access to those personalities who know what is happening behind the walls.
Second, it is clear that Belfiore gained considerable knowledge about rockets from his previous book. He is more comfortable in writing about this area of DARPA rather than about the game-changing world of computers and artificial intelligence or the larger DARPA agenda. He frankly admits his lack of understanding and seems willing to let that lack of knowledge ride in exchange for defaulting to the personalities working in these arenas.
He points out that much of his information comes from DARPA contractors who aren't veiled in the same "secrecy" or opaqueness of DARPA itself. Yet he has not taken the time to explore the breadth of this contracted research but limits himself more to the historic, the visible and his personal zone of comfort.
What Belfiore hits by accident and dismisses in order to retain his narrow focus is that while DARPA is "edgy" it is only the tip of a very large iceberg of military research by each of the various branches, some of which are of a similar nature to what DARPA is doing. One would think, from this book, that DARPA represents where the defense industry's research and development's edge is today.
It's not sufficiently technologically detailed, and does not significantly clarify what is currently going on behind the closed doors. It is more a personal tale of travel through the corridors of history and personalities than the essence of what makes DARPA a force on the frontiers of research today and for the future. Crossing the Threshold: Advancing into Space to Benefit the Earth ReviewCrossing the Threshold: Advancing into Space to Benefit the Earth Written by retired NASA life support engineer Paul Wieland Crossing the Threshold is a compact 193 page book, not including a helpful but lengthy section of end notes and its very complete index, that is primarily concerned with advancing its author's arguments for continuing and better research in space exploration. The book is well-done, inexpensive, and quite clear, I would say even well-written, with a bare minimum of jargon. It also has loads of engaging quotes and lots and lots of jazzy new ideas (carbon nanotubes, space elevators, solar sails, and the like come to mind, for example) many of which will be very much less than familiar to all but true "Space Buffs."
Wieland's own non-traditional path to going to work for NASA is most likely responsible for the unique design. The book's author was born and raised in the South and did all his earlier work in botany not rocket engineering so bits of history and place --both his own and otherwise-- are sprinkled throughout. This helps liven and infuse the book with good perspective and a most pleasant feeling of optimism. Certainly what one can learn in Crossing the Threshold goes far beyond this reader's expectations for a book of this type. A report it certainly is not.
At its heart for Wieland doing future space research is (and has to be) in all of our interest, but it has to change by being more concerned with making itself relevant to the common future by keeping the complexities of modern life, the dangers and huge costs of doing more, and all the other intrinsic threats to our world ecology foremost.
I very much recommend this book to any reader who fondly remembers the halcyon days of Sputnik, Alan Shephard, and the Apollo moon shots but also to those of younger generation who have only read about these exciting exploits in books or may have even been turned off by the two dreadful Shuttle accidents. As the author might say about the latter group, it is now they who must become excited enough to take things over and to carry this important work on.
My view is that he was successful arguing his points. This is a very good read for anyone has been wondering about how relevant space research is and whether it can come to benefit either the nation or mankind and the earth in general. For a where-we-have-come-from and where-we-need-to-be-going tale and about space research no less it's quite likely the only book now available. You should see for yourself.

Modern Experimental Design (Wiley Series in Probability and Statistics) ReviewTom Ryan and I have much in common. We are both industrial statisticians. We are both fellows of the American Statistical Association. We both have authored two or more texts with John Wiley and Sons, Inc. Currently we are also both instructors at statistics.com teaching courses out of our most recent Wiley publications. We also have mutual admiration and respect for one another. As always I will be as honest and objective as I can be in reviewing this book. But to be fair to the readers I must admit that Tim sent me a free copy of the book for the purpose of a public review.
Tom has written a number of books on quality control, regression analysis and experimental design. They all are beautifully written filled with many realistic examples and are very educational. They are scholarly and contain numerous relevant references.
This text is very new being published in 2007, Wiley's 200th anniversary, coincidently the same year as the second edition of my bootstrap book was published. Tom does a fine job of covering all the key topics in experiemental design. Experimental design originated in the agricultural industry in the early 1900s. It was what motivated Gosset and Fisher in their development of statistical methodology and design. The same was true for Kempthorne and others. These days it is heavily used in the manufacturing industry to help develop and maintain quality products. I think it is the engineering and QC applications that Ryan is mainly involved in. I work in pharmaceutical clinical trials where we do not have a great deal of use for it. But it does have a major place in the early phase of drug development.
The book is very extensive, covers many examples and about all the designs that I know about and some that I have only heard of including split plot, randomized blocks, incomplete blocks, Latin and Graeco-Latin squares, Youden Squares, factorial and fractional factorials, the robust designs and the many designs for exploring response surfaces including central composite, Box-Behnken, No topic is left untreated.
This is an intermediate level text perhaps a little more advanced than Box, Hunter and Hunter and the text by Montgomery but not as advanced as the book by Wu and Hamada. It has a number of features that make it valuable and makes me glad I have it on my bookshelf.
(1) The Analysis of Means (ANOM)is covered, a topic I have only seen discussed in Ryan's books. It is different from analysis of variance (ANOVA) but can easily be confused with it. With each design technique Ryan shows how to do both ANOM and ANOVA.
(2) He provides numerous prectical example with Mintab and SAS as software tooks for carrying out the construction and analysis of the designs.
(3) He provides a wealth of references on the many diverse topics covered in the text.
(4) He covers the non-traditional topics for a first course in design including robust designs, optimal designs, nested designs, repeated measure designs including cross-over designs (these repeated measure designs particularly the mixed effects linear models are commonplace in the clinical trials arena),many common response surface designs but also some that are new to me such as Draper-Lin, Koshal, Hoke, uniform shell designs and others.
(5) The common but ill adviced one-at-a-time factor designs are discussed. These methods can hide the potentially synergist effects that two or more variables can give. I have published a paper on this topic before.
(6) Under miscellaneous contributions, Ryan includes the one-factor-at-a-time designs, Cotter designs, rotational designs and space-filling designs such as the latin hyercube designs, and evolutionary operation (EVOP) designs.
