These are quotes about all aspects of life and human character. The quotes are arranged by theme and carefully indexed by author. It's great for just browsing or for picking up when you need something specific. I own an entire bookshelf of quotation compilations and this is one of my favorites. Sadly, as Kyle Olson exposes in this eminently readable book -- that's exactly what kids in America are being taught in public schools. Smartest 401(k) Book You'll Ever Read: Maximize Your Retirement Savings...the Smart Way ReviewI bought the updated edition (Feb. 2010) from my local Costco store and read the entire book from cover to cover in two hours. (I have a background in investment, but currently unemployed.) I feel rather ambivalent about the author and the book.
On the one hand, I totally agree with his claim that the entire 401(k) system is corrupt, as is the entire investment management industry, and the U.S. government is a willing and active cohort in this scam to rob American employees of their retirement savings. My own 401(k) plans have seen paltry returns over the last 15 years, despite my effort at picking the "best" funds that were available to me. (No, I don't chase past year's performance.) Call me bitter, but from talking to my friends and former coworkers, this seems a commonplace experience, and this book explains why it's the case. The action chapters, esp. in part 3, are also decent, although as another reviewer has said, the entire action plan can be summarized in two sentences: diversify your portfolio, and only invest in low-cost index funds. The author does provide a list of funds to consider, although your plans may not offer them at all (see the "cheat sheet" in chap. 24 of the 2010 edition).
On the other hand, I'm not sure what the author's true motive in writing this book is. Is it really to help us worker bees to save for our (gloomy) retirement? As I was reading the book, I got the feeling that he was writing the book primary to sell the book, kind of doing what the mutual funds he criticizes are doing. For example, he cherry-picks on certain numbers, such as quoting historical returns without mentioning the significant inflationary effect of survivor bias (i.e., only companies that survive get included in calculating market returns).* He compares accumulative returns (using a 40-year horizon -- man, how many readers of this book have that many years to contribute to a 401(k) plan???) between a 2% expense ratio fund and a 0.3 expense ratio fund, but neglects to tell you that the difference is partially tempered by taxation. He does provide a bibliography, which is good, but who knows if he only picked the "research" that he agreed with and omitted anything that contradicts his belief?
The 2010 paperback edition also suffers from certain logic lapses, such as the first chapter about "Wan Ba Shi," as well as typos and grammatical errors.
One warning I should give is, the book's website appears to be mostly a marketing gimmick for his IFA products. I took the 25-question survey. At the end of the survey, I *HAD TO* give them my name, state, home *and* work phone numbers, and e-mail address, in order to see the survey results. The result page itself is titled "Investment policy statement" and contains numerous references to his IFA company and also contains a signature section for me to sign!!! Not a good thing, Mr. Solin, for someone who claims to be impartial and to expose a rigged system.

Crisis: Cause, Containment and Cure ReviewI like this book. I have read a number of books on the financial crisis and the Great Recession and this is the best of them. It comprehensively, but succinctly, analyses the causes of the crisis, the actions that the authorities in the US and Europe have taken to contain it, and progress that has been achieved through early 2011 on measures to reduce the chances and severity of future crises. Working in the U.S. financial services industry during the S&L crisis and subsequently as a senior regulator in the UK's Financial Services Authority (FSA), and with a rare command of both academic and policy analysis, the author is unusually well placed to command crisis events in both Europe and the US.
In his analysis of the causes of the crisis, the author seeks to find what went wrong and thus needs to be fixed. In doing so he avoids the pitfall of so many analysts in the US who make political points by placing the blame on either greedy bankers or ideologically driven governments that reward their supporters at the cost of their country's needs. The author `s description of crisis responses is enriched by examining the reasons for the US authorities, especially the Federal Reserve's slowness to respond in the early stage of the crisis. He blames a universal flaw in economic models that treat the financial sector as a passive transmission channel for policy stimuli rather than as an active, but flawed, player in the process.
Encompassing actions both in the US and in Europe enhances the author's analysis of progress in fixing the faults in the system. The chapters on failed bank resolution and regulatory reform encompassing the Basel Committee's introduction of revised capital standards and new liquidity requirements are particularly rewarding.
The book is well written, has a minimum of end-notes so that the reader is not forever scrambling to recover his place, but has an excellent list of references. Ending early in 2011, the book does not deal with the euro crisis, which can be perceived as the next phase of the crash that began in 2007. Perhaps the author will follow this up in a third edition of the book. Yet the book, as currently written, satisfied my hope that it will allow me to enjoy learning something new. I will give it as a gift to my friends.

The Big Thirst: The Secret Life and Turbulent Future of Water ReviewAs an editor in the pulp and paper industry, I'm aware of what our own industry is doing to use less water and recycle and reuse the water that it does use. But this book has given me a much broader view of the water issue thanks to Mr. Fishman's clever writing, excellent research, and fascinating stories drawn from his global travels. He has achieved the seemingly impossible by writing an entire book about the single topic of water, and making it fascinating reading. I'll never look at or think about water the same way again, and I've already found myself looking for little ways in which I can reduce my use of this precious resource.
This should be required reading for everyone.

I mean that literally: the html pages from wikipedia are just printed out and bound into a book. If I look at the wikipedia versions of the articles, I can see that the text is the same, almost word for word. I say "almost" because several of the wikipedia articles have apparently had more content added to them since this author stole them.
Even the "references" and "external links" sections of the wikipedia articles are printed out. That's right, entire pages of unclickable links!
If you have access to the internet, just go straight to wikipedia and don't waste your time with this book, it is a complete scam. How this author can sleep at night when he is making money from other people's work is beyond me.

In general, these can be much harder to do, than simply finding a signature of a file and then comparing it against a blacklist. This can be done without running the file. A very safe approach. But some behavioural methods might involve having to run the file in a sandbox. Which is more elaborate, and might have the possibility that the binary might do unwanted things or even break out of a badly coded sandbox.
You can consider the text as a good sequel to books that have already been out for a few years, like "Malware: Fighting Malicious Code" by Skoudis and Zeltser, or "Counter Hack Reloaded" by Skoudis and Liston. One obstacle might be the list price of $139. Unfortunately, this is typical of the publisher's offerings, which have a specialised and limited audience. One of the biggest problems with books purporting to offer guidance on building real-time systems, critical systems, etc. is that the authors often have never actually built such systems. When building these kinds of systems, experience is the best teacher, and this collection of studies embodies a great deal of real-world experience.
The set of case studies selected is appropriate, covering medical systems transportation systems, infrastructure control systems, military systems and more. Much of the focus, appropriately, is on effective requirements elicitation and analysis - it is well known that failures in mission critical systems are largely due to errors in requirements engineering. Another important focus of the book is on regulatory compliance, which imposes an additional degree of difficulty for mission critical systems.
This book is a must have desk reference for those building mission critical software systems. It can also be used as a classroom text for courses in real-time systems or embedded systems.

Adobe Scripting: Your Visual Blueprint to Scripting in Photoshop and Illustrator ReviewThis book is written extremely well and perfect for someone like me who knows plenty of scripting languages but just needs help with the details in Photoshop and Illustrator.
The major problem is that this book was published in January of 2003 and was written for Photoshop 7 and Illustrator 10. Naturally, I have the CS package and that is just too new for this publication. When you run many many of the scripts (maybe most of them... I stopped using their examples after the first few) it hangs Photoshop or causes other errors. One "new document" script actually killed my G5 (first time ever I had to reboot from a crash!).
I phoned the company who made the book (maranGraphics) and they were not helpful. There is no new version of this book planned nor is there an "updates" website or any further help.
My advice: Unless you are working with only older versions of Photoshop and Illustrator, skip this book. Instead, use the PDFs that come with the CS package. They are as helpful as this book will be to you without the problems that will cause crashes.
My advice to Maran: You should take a clue from other companies that make tech help books and provide a free "updates" site that includes differences between your book and later releases of software or any errata or whatnot. NPR: The Trials and Triumphs of National Public Radio ReviewI'll confess that NPR (the book, not the radio network) was not quite what I expected. I anticipated a semi-lightweight book that combined weighty historical events with a deft, humorous hand, sort of like NPR itself. Opening it up, I looked forward to reading misty-eyed reminisces with Scott Simon and Terri Gross, or Bob Edwards and Susan Stamberg relating their experiences during the early days of NPR.
Nope. This book may be a relatively quick read (130 pages, not counting the extensive end-notes), but it is a dense, meticulously researched, and quite serious history of the genesis and evolution of NPR. Particular attention is paid to the political processes that spawned it, as well as to the funding and leadership crises and challenges that it has experienced.
In short, while this isn't the fun stuff, it is the "brass tacks" important stuff.
While on-air personalities are not ignored, they get no more text allotted to them than NPR producers, news directors, and human resource managers. Thus, NPR (the book) is a non-profit corporate history. As someone with a high tolerance for the minutiae, I liked it.
