Follies of Power: America's Unipolar Fantasy ReviewI bought this book without knowing much about the author. I am glad I did. This is an excellent piece of work, thoroughly researched and provides great insight to Europe's foreign policy in relation to the United States'. It is thought-provoking and challenges the almost sacrosanct belief that United States should 'rightly' be leader of the world. A belief which, the author has shown, has been nurtured since Manifest Destiny and greatly promoted by Democratic and Republican presidents alike since the 1940s. The result is an ever increasing expansion of the United States's role. The end of the Cold War, the author argues, has only encouraged greater American involvement in foreign affairs, not less.
The problem is, despite what most Americans think about their country's place in the world, there are other nations out there who don't necessarily agree with the US's unipolar vision. Not even Europe, the author shows, like this American-dominant world view.
The passages in each chapter are excellently written but the footnotes are also delight to read. Fully recommended.
