Sex, Drugs and Bon Jovi ReviewWhere to begin as there are so many takeaways...
There's the rise of Bon Jovi story- an interesting one from the perspective of what it actually took for the band to break out. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that Bon Jovi's career was built on financial support from pot trafficking, but reading it in black and white was still somewhat of a shocker given his all American image. Diehard Bon Jovi fans will love the back stories of sex, drugs and the grueling life that touring brings with it.
There's also the Doc McGhee story- a public outing of an a**hole is never pretty, and this book does a good job of telling the tale. Why is it that even when people are making bank they feel compelled to screw the people that helped make the whole thing happen? One has to wonder if Doc regrets the decision after Jon fired him later on.
Then there's the story of when marketing took hold of music. Building the Bon Jovi brand was done in the same manner as making dish soap popular by using focus groups to craft an image that caters to specific demographic targets, which was something new to the industry at the time. Doc hired marketing guru Jordan Stanley from Young & Rubicam, was also responsible for other brand development initiatives including Jell-O, Kentucky Fried Chicken, PAM Cooking Spray and Advil around that time to position and the Bon Jovi brand. Stanley has since left Young & Rubicam and is now hawking soap, listing "Ivory Snow" as one of his featured clients. No wonder why Bon Jovi's music has historically been so bland. This approach to building artists was the beginning of the end for the music industry as far as I'm concerned.
Underscoring the whole story is one of greed. Greed by Doc, and certainly the greed exhibited by Jon Bon Jovi himself. Doc was getting his 20%, the accountants were getting 10%, while Tico & Richie were provided a mind blowing 1%, and Alec and David were further screwed with .5%, while Jon was making off with the rest. I'm guessing that if Richie's solo career would have taken off, he, Tico and David would have told Jon to take a hike. Anytime accountants make 300% more than what the rest of the band is, you know there's no shame in thievery. I find it pretty weak that Jon couldn't connect those dots!
Lastly, this book emits a level of sadness and remorse from a guy that clearly misses his buds, and the life they once shared. There was really no reason this book should had to have been written if men had kept their word, but it clearly had to be. Mr. Bozzett highlights other fallen heroes that served in the same role as him- including his best friend Richie Fisher and fellow tour manager for Motley Crue, who ended up penniless and in an insane asylum after attempting suicide by jumping off the Waldorf Astoria hotel. While the rock stars are the guys that the audience knows, it's the behind the scenes folks that make it all happen, and are clearly first line casualties in the battle of building a b(r)and. It also enumerates that it's not just the musicians that often get screwed, and the importance of contracts.
The bad- this book could have been just as good without publishing the pictures that Bozzett had acquired, and it could potentially have been even better as it would have forced him to dig deeper and flush out more details of life on the road. In doing so it makes the author look a bit small minded. If you like pictures, there's a lot of them. Which makes up for the fact that there's not a lot written. The book only came to 152 pages, a lot of which are taken up by said images.
The surprising- what I hadn't realized that until I read this book was just how much of a hand Doc McGhee and Jon Bon Jovi had in creating the monster that the music industry became. All in all, this quick read is a good history lesson of what went wrong in the music industry, with some monster anecdotal stories along the way.
